And yes, the book of course makes clear that perpetrators never have a right to "make things right" with the victim. That is and always has to be the victim's choice.

Restorative justice is great when efforts are taken to actually restore. As you point out that can't be the same as trying to turn back the clock. @theradr.bsky.social has a great book out about actual repair which requires repentance, going back to ideas from Maimonides.

If there is going to be a reckoning about violence in progressive organizing spaces, we need to be prepared to hear survivors’ critiques of restorative justice. A lot of progressives think restorative justice is the only path forward, but it can be weaponized and co-opted just like other processes.

To be clear: If you funnel thousands of scientists into a massive, broad grant pool, but use "agency priorities" or geography to decide who actually gets the money, it's true that bottom-up science becomes top-down quickly Both are true: fewer targeted NOFOs, more political influence on grants

A wild exchange captured in yesterday's AAP decision overturning RFK Jr's ACIP appointments. The Trump admin argues that the CDC can literally advocate for *spreading measles* without court review under the APA. This case isn't just about vaccine policy. This is a battle for objective truth.
This argument can only be countenanced if one completely abandons the idea of objective fact, a nihilist endeavor this Court does not find appropriately read into Congress’s public health statutes. An exchange during oral argument sums it up well: THE COURT: . . . let’s say that instead of revising the vaccine schedule, the CDC said, actually, we think measles is good for you; you should go have lunch with someone with measles, and we are sponsoring measles lunches in every city, come have some measles lunch, that would seem to -- that would seem to go right up against the goal of preventing communicable diseases. Would such a policy by the CDC be judicially reviewable? [DEFENSE COUNSEL:] I think that would still be committed to agency discretion by law. THE COURT: So even if what the agency was saying is we like communicable diseases and we think you should get more of them, that’s not judicially reviewable. [DEFENSE COUNSEL:] No.

Judaism is not a race, either, in some essential sense, but antisemitism is still a form of hatred that racializes Jews. Nothing "is" a race. Race is not a real category, but a socially constructed one. And Islamophobia racializes Muslims and Arabs as Other in the US and European context.
