#PPOD: ESA’s Smile mission has captured its first ultraviolet image of Earth’s northern aurora, revealing the glowing oval during an auroral substorm. Smile’s Ultraviolet Imager captured the image, observing ultraviolet light produced when energetic particles... 🧪 🔭
A square blue image, with a little over half of Earth taking up most of the image. Earth looks like how we see the Moon when it is waxing or waning at just over a half-Moon. Because this is an ultraviolet image, Earth does not appear in its usual colours, but is light blue with a white ring. This ring is about a third of the size of the face of Earth that we see, and is quite swirly, like clouds or dye being mixed with water. The background of the image is dark blue, with some tiny white dots: these are stars.

the hague, september 2026. iphone 15 pro max camera on various lens settings.
A dark green staircase railing with gold leaf detailing wraps around the white walls, with a long abstract chandelier hanging in the center. On one wall, an enormous replica MC Escher painting is displayed. A beach that is nearly empty, four people walk along the edge of the tide in the sand while golden sunlight scatters through the dark grey clouds. On the far left, a pier extends into the sea hosting a Ferris wheel and outlook tower. A fluffy cat with orange and white marbled fur sits on a stone path framed by bright pink and red flowers. The cat is facing away from the camera and down a tunnel of green vines further along the path. Two umbrellas connected by a soft orange string of lights sit before a row of red and white stone buildings, framed against dark grey and peach clouds in a light blue sky.

A historic stone church is framed against a light blue sky with wispy white clouds at the edges of the photo. A trimmed hedge garden sits at the edge of a river framed by trees, with Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias in the background against a light blue sky with a single pale peach trail of clouds.A historic red and white stone building is flanked by two modern grey concrete buildings. People on bikes zip by on the street and the sky is a clear light blue. A dark grey box is graffitied with a colorful swirl and white text that says "Life is sweet!" on a shady street lined with trees. Colorful buildings reflect sunlight from above.

Every missing grant should have gone to someone. Last week @science.org reported that the NSF cut research by 20-30%. That's maybe why only ~12% of 2025's grant total had been awarded by June 15 2026 (~70% through the fiscal year). Funding can be restored. Lost scientists? Not so much. More 👇

Is the NSF slashing research to fund a tech initiative?

$14 million is anywhere from 7 to ~100 National Science Foundation grants in geosciences. At $2 million, a grant would support deployment of geophysical instruments + ~2 grad students + postdoc to work on it for 2-3 years. At $250,000 a grant would support a grad student or postdoc for 2-3 years.

Since the first human eyes saw the Moon up close in the 1960s, we've learnt to regard it as grey, 'barren' (how I hate that term), dead, passively pock-marked by craters. But it isn't any of those things. We just haven't learnt to see the Moon on its own terms. 🧪 #PlanetSci
