This week’s new arrivals. (And one from a couple of weeks ago, which I forgot to post about)

Apropos of nothing, here's the callout I wrote for Eurogamer about the glaring lack of female voices in the games media. I wrote this in *2018*. Things did seem to get better for a while but now we're backsliding again and the reasons for it haven't changed. www.eurogamer.net/why-the-game...

Manga Video were known for their ultra violent 18 rated anime tapes. I wanted one but was a bit too chicken so I asked for Odin, one of the few PG rated tapes. It was… really boring. But I still have some nostalgia for it.

I completely agree with the sentiment of the headline. Shining Force does need a comeback! I’m less sure about the assertion that Fire Emblem became popular with Three Houses, or the suggestion that Monkey Ball characters should be playable in a new Shining Force! www.polygon.com/shining-forc...

Shared with me on the other site… An arcade cab in Merseyside running all three scenarios of Shining Force III in English… It’s an abomination but I kind of respect it!

One new arrival this week… Not that exciting but one step closer to a complete Konami collection.

This arrived today and it is incredible. If you’re a Weezer fan, then it’s a must-have; an astonishing historical artefact and a great listen.

Just finished this great vid by @robcap.bsky.social - the only games I was familiar with were Hydlide and Silpheed, in other formats than these OG versions. (And shout out to my boy Thexder in the outro; I recall the Amiga port being insanely difficult... 😂 ) #BeyondTheScanlines #RetroGaming

25 years since GameCube launch, which means it’s also 25 years since I started uni. I blew a bit chunk of my student loan on a Japanese GameCube week one, and traded in my whole Dreamcast collection to get a bunch of games. We sunk hours into Smash Bros Melee in my dorm room that winter.

More MSX happening today. Treasure Of Usas is a dual language cart so I had to get my PAL MSX2 out of the loft to play it in English. This is a fun game. One of Konami’s lesser known platformers but full of the good stuff you’d expect from them.

Two very different Aliens: The Computer Games were released after the 1986 movie. The UK one was a first-person horror set in a maze-like facility. The US Version turned film scenes into minigames. Both are featured, in depth, in Aliens: The Video Games. Out now via @penandswordbooks.bsky.social.

My book, Aliens: The Video, with copies of Aliens: The Computer Game - the UK version on Commodore cassette, the US on Amstrad cassette.

What are the top 5 best schmups you’ve ever played? I’ll go first, though they keep changing: Ikaruga (DC) Musha Aleste (MD) Battle Garegga (SS) Cho Ren Sha 68k (X68000) Sektori (PC, Switch, PS5) Perhaps the latter isn’t a shoot’em’up in the traditional sense, but I make the rules here.

Star Wars: Zero Company just went from great to excellent. It’s very rare that the tactical mechanics of a game provoke an emotional response but this game did it somehow. Bravo!
