This project grows directly out of my own work reconstructing and linking historical populations characterised by considerable ethnic, racial, linguistic and social diversity: when we reconstruct populations from historical records, who gets represented and who gets missed out?

I’m especially looking forward to thinking across the Caribbean and Indian Ocean experiences of slavery, emancipation and their long-term legacies.

Drawing on my work on the #Caribbean, I’ll explore what changed with emancipation, what did not, and how unequal access to land, wealth and political power allowed structures created under slavery to persist long after abolition.

I’ll be talking about “The Long Shadow of Slavery: Institutions, Emancipation, and Persistent Inequality.” A simple question is at the heart of the talk: what happens to inequality when slavery ends?

📌 After emancipation, opportunities remained firmly in the hands of the elite and did so for a long time. 🔑 We stress how redistribution can reduce inequality: principles of economic justice and fairness must couple with the redistribution of key resources to affect wealth/income distribution.

Tariffs are also a *regressive* tax on Americans, which means that the burden falls more heavily on lower-income Americans. Income taxes are the opposite. So shifting taxation from income taxes to tariffs is a transfer of money from low-income Americans to high-income Americans.
