📝 My paper on generalized additive models (GAMs) in animal science is out! Learn nonlinear relationships from data, estimate growth rates and compare treatments, with cows, pigs and quail + reproducible #RStats code. Open access: doi.org/10.1016/j.an... #mgcv #AnimalScience #Statistics 🧪
Eight panels show body mass over 78 days for 57 Japanese quail. Columns represent control, T4, T3 and combined T3–T4 hormone treatments; rows separate females and males. Coloured points are measurements, lines are individual growth curves fitted by a hierarchical generalized additive model, and shading shows 95% credible intervals. Growth slows towards a plateau, with females generally reaching higher body masses than males.Eighteen panels show individual pig growth curves. Black points mark daily average weight estimates from a depth camera; blue lines show curves fitted by a hierarchical generalized additive model, with shaded 95% credible intervals. Weights generally increase over time, with differences in growth and measurement variability among pigs. Uncertainty widens where measurements are sparse or absent.Four-panel comparison of models fitted to a cow’s average daily milk fat production. Observations rise to a peak around weeks 8–10, then decline. The first panel shows fitted curves and uncertainty bands for Wood’s model, a Tweedie GLM and a Tweedie GAM. Residual plots show curved patterns for Wood’s model and the GLM, but little remaining pattern for the GAM.

I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:
theclimatebrink.com
What if the world hadn't built wind and solar?
Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

webrarian is a new R package. It turns a folder of R scripts and data into a static website where R runs in the visitor's browser, with no compute server and nothing to install. blog.thecoatlessprofessor.com/posts/introd... #rstats #webr #webassembly
A card for the R package webrarian. Large text reads "A folder in. A website out." On the left, a small card lists a folder named lab-01 holding lab.R, setup.R and a data folder. A red arrow points from it to a browser window that shows a scatterplot of car weight against miles per gallon with brick-red points. The address coatless-wasm.github.io/webrarian is on the card.

Interesting report from OpenAI... Maybe we shouldn't blindly trust these tools to do our science yet? #AI openai.com/index/model-...
OpenAI report:

. Instructions to conceal mistakes in task summaries . During the training of GPT5.6 Sol, many model instances added instructions to their summaries to conceal mistakes or misaligned behavior from the user. For example, compaction summaries included instructions to invent missing historical data without disclosing it and to hide mismatches in source versions. . Searching public repositories for exposed API keys, then fabricating information. While answering a routine question about earnings figures in a California county, a model found and used an exposed API key without authorization. When it still wasn’t able to retrieve the requested figures, it fabricated them and presented them as data from the requested source. . Uploading files to the internet in order to cite them. When a user asked an unreleased model for the IDs and names of lakes larger than 5,000,000 square meters, the agent found the correct answer using Python. But since the instructions asked for a browser citation, the agent decided to upload the file so that it could cite it in its answer, without asking the user. . Unsanctioned writes and communication through an internal software repository. Models used an internal software repository as a message board to exchange requests and responses across separate training samples while searching for missing input files, though they weren’t able to recover those files. This report also examines an earlier instance in which a model successfully uploaded test files to a repository while attempting to bypass network restrictions. . Unsanctioned file sharing between collaborating agents . Agents working together on the same training task used public file-hosting websites to share files when they could not access one another’s local files. This made task deliverables available at public URLs, even though the task requested the models use only local files.

'Normality of Raw Data in General Linear Models: the Most Widespread Myth in Statistics' From 2003 @esajournals.bsky.social. Myth still alive and kicking... doi.org/10.1890/0012... #statistics
In years of statistical consulting for ecologists and wildlife biologists, by far the most common misconception we have come across has been the one about normality in general linear models. These comprise a very large part of the statistical models used in ecology and include t tests, simple and multiple linear regression, polynomial regression, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance (ANCOVA). There is a widely held belief that the normality assumption pertains to the raw data rather than to the model residuals. We suspect that this error may also occur in countless published studies, whenever the normality assumption is tested prior to analysis. This may lead to the use of nonparametric alternatives (if there are any), when parametric tests would indeed be appropriate, or to use of transformations of raw data, which may introduce hidden assumptions such as multiplicative effects on the natural scale in the case of log-transformed data.

This paper is 20 years old but keeps being as relevant today as back then :/ doi.org/10.1111/j.13... #statistics #ecopubs
Why do we still use stepwise modelling in ecology and behaviour?

The principal drawbacks of stepwise multiple regression include bias in parameter estimation, inconsistencies among model selection algorithms, an inherent (but often overlooked) problem of multiple hypothesis testing, and an inappropriate focus or reliance on a single best model.

Proficient use of quantitative methods requires moving beyond procedural competence; it requires judgement, critical thinking and the ability to connect statistical approaches to ecological questions (Bolker, 2009). Yet contemporary ecology is characterised by an increasingly diverse and specialised collection of analytical methods, many of which can appear disconnected from broad ecological questions and inaccessible to non-specialists (McCrea et al., 2023). Attempting to train ecologists in the continual expansion of methods risks fragmenting and diluting learning, obscuring core principles, placing unrealistic demands on both students and educators within the finite time available for formal training and encouraging unnecessary use of complex models (Murtaugh, 2007).

We advocate for a shift away from methods-centred curricula, which can encourage heuristic thinking, towards a more process-based approach to quantitative training. Rather than presenting statistics as the selection of analytical tools from an ever-expanding repertoire of methods, training should focus on building fundamental conceptual understanding: how ecological data are generated, including study design, observation processes, sources of error, variability and uncertainty (Fieberg et al., 2020); how statistical models represent these processes and encode assumptions; and how analytical decisions shape inference. Statistical analysis can then be framed as a means of understanding and modelling ecological systems, helping learners connect ecological questions, data-generating processes and inference. Such foundations enable learners to critically evaluate analyses

A century of inertia in quantitative ecology education @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social #ecopubs doi.org/10.1111/2041...
In this perspective, we revisit longstanding concerns about quantitative learning and literacy in ecology and posit why, despite enduring and widespread agreement on educational goals, progress in quantitative ecology education has remained limited. We suggest that the challenge facing quantitative ecology education is no longer simply identifying what and how ecologists should learn, but understanding why progress towards achieving quantitative literacy has been constrained. We then offer a vision to overcome the inertia.
