One of the best questions we can all ask these days is, “How?” It’s simple and smart and a non-answer tells you as much as an answer. Skynet is going to kill is? How? We are moving to the moon? How? Build a big net around earth? How??

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

stop treating the culture wars as an exogenous shock. political actors made strategic choices to create and weaponize them. they are not a curious weather condition public schools failed to dress appropriately for.

a key reason why rape culture persists is because men do not fear reprisals from *other men*. they do not expect other men to care if they raped someone. they do not expect other men to treat them poorly. they believe that most men will doubt a victim's story and demand evidence.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Getting rid of Jonathan Majors was the right decision, getting rid of Kang was the wrong decision and while there are a dozen ways they could have done a non-Majors Kang, this might be the most fun.

I research teachers' work. There is a known gap between public perception and the actual day-to-day experience of teaching that sociologist Dan Lortie poetically described as coming from "the apprenticeship of observation." This imagination/reality gap creates lots of problems in ed policy.

Again: AI is a technology but it's also an ideology; that ideology is Bossism; neither bosses nor AI advocates really understand what most people do in their jobs so both assume AI can do it. They're *trying* but if these tools could replace jobs beyond Junior Software Developer, we'd know.

The main reason you haven’t heard about campus sexual violence in a few years is because Trump and SCOTUS have made it much, much harder for survivors to come forward. You might vaguely remember that Title IX was a big battleground in his first term. And that we lost.

Or even just get a vintage stone. There are a crap-ton of diamonds already in circulation -- resize an art deco ring! Take the stones out of a tiny vintage ring and make something new. Many options other than contributing to the diamond mining industry.

This thread is especially salient in conjunction with 404's new piece today. One of the few actually popular uses of modern AI tools is pornographic imagery. And while that obviously implies other cultural concerns as well, I think it's in part because it's *what people can think of using it for*.

This, and that "free time" just becomes more work time. All that productivity and time you supposedly save using genAI isn't free. More work is added to that fill time. So now you're wasting time fixing genAI *and* doing more additional work you don't have time for.

I also think a lot of people think that their job is the white collar job. They don’t understand that this includes everything from healthcare to teaching. They think a very specific engine engineering or coding-Heavy job is the white collar job.

I suspect a lot of the mid-aughts "everything you could possibly dream of is at the office, dedicated shuttle to work, you never have to think about anything but your job" Bay Area tech culture utterly destroyed that whole cohort's ability to design products useful for anyone else.

And I cannot say this part enough — AI agents aren’t fun. Maybe some of the LLM/chatbot experience captured affect. But an existential crisis about your social relations and how hard your life is so you can solve .0001% of a problem task at about 60-70% accurate, if you’re lucky, isn’t fun.

What this looked like in practice: People came to the class excited or at least mildly interested in learning what an ai agent could do for them. The trainers came to help people train an agent for their known specific cases. Everyone quickly realized that there wasn’t much middle ground.

The Venn diagram of people who don’t even notice this and who spiral all the way out when they encounter a joke/reference that they don't understand and that you won't explain to them is a circle. And that's not even getting into those who actively desire and encourage forced homogeneity.

There's a very famous sketch about an Alexa controlled elevator in Scotland and the vocal contortions folks need to use to get it to work. AI is forcing conformity on more than just the accents though. Structure and syntax must fit its parameters. It forces homogenization.

Amen. The most broadly useful cases seem to be "here's a lot of organized, human-vetted data from which you can make decisions." The hurdle in every case *I'd* use it for is the vetting. And by the time I've checked everything, I barely need it organized, b/c I was decision-making while doing so.

For example, do I need the tires today or do I need the good enough but not most expensive tires for just the front two because the back two can make it a few more weeks to payday and I can turn off that check engine light so you don’t have to pay a dealer premium. That’s SOCIAL and cultural.

This is a good example. It assumes that the person can afford the price of whatever shop is available, for one thing. It also misunderstands that finding someone to work on your car is, for a lot of people, a social relation as much an economic one.
