Two extraordinary charts from today’s PISA test results: 1) School test scores continue to collapse internationally, underscoring how this is no longer a Covid effect but sustained decline. Those falls in reading and maths are equivalent to about two years of lost schooling.

The opening and closing paragraphs of a superb article on how China’s state subsidies and Trump’s bizarre war of choice in the Middle East are doing more to tackle climate change than the EU’s sophisticated emissions trading scheme.
We economists had climate change all worked out. We recognised carbon emissions were a negative externality, and endlessly econo-splained what negative externality meant. We envisioned governments using carbon prices to make companies bear the cost of their emissions, preferably harmonising prices into a multilateral global one. We scoffed at inefficient state subsidies and regulations compared to market-based mechanisms. It would be better for the world to include the efficient and predictable carbon pricing model pioneered by the EU at least as part of the climate change mix. There's no guarantee that the route we're on, with China dumping green tech on the world and Trump creating demand for it, will endure. But for the moment, bizarrely, it's one of the best hopes we have.

Europe is the world’s fastest-warming continent. We’ve seen record heatwaves from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, while glaciers have been shrinking and snow cover melting. The evidence is unequivocal: climate change is not a ‘future’ threat. It is our present reality. ⬇️
A circular map of Europe and the Arctic region showing the rate of warming from 1996 to 2025, measured in degrees Celsius per decade. Most of Europe is shaded in orange to deep red, indicating significant warming, especially in Eastern Europe and parts of Scandinavia. The Arctic region north of Scandinavia and Russia is the darkest red, showing the fastest warming. Greenland shows mixed colors, with some areas in light tones and patches of blue, indicating little warming or slight cooling. The North Atlantic west of Europe appears in pale colors and light blue, suggesting slower warming or localized cooling. A color bar at the bottom ranges from dark blue (cooling, about -1.5°C per decade) to dark red (warming, about +1.5°C per decade).
