🌳⚡ Our new paper — Powerful Forests — shows that Amazon deforestation is not only an environmental problem. It is also an energy market problem. Forests sustain rainfall → rainfall sustains rivers → rivers sustain hydropower → hydropower supplies most of Brazil's electricity.

Thrilled to see this paper out! It shows how political interference in environmental licensing drives Amazon deforestation. Now, we're seeing history repeat itself: pressure is mounting to approve oil drilling despite technical warnings (see below). Well, our paper doesn't bring good news...

Since August, Manaus in the Amazon has been covered with smoke from forest fires with little public awareness. That’s unfortunate. Rafael Araujo, Teevrat Garg, and I studied what happened when Amazon forest fires went viral in August 2019.
