My third novel, HERO COME HOME, officially has a cover! Preorderable from the usual places us.macmillan.com/books/978125...
The cover of my third novel, HERO COME HOME. Four human figures centred, the main image being that of a bearded man looking back over his shoulder (that's Oro, the protagonist), with a circle of symbols behind him. We can see a swan and a key. In the foreground are three people: two women, one with a mysterious marking? scar? who knows!? on her cheek and the other carrying a sword, flanking an older, balding man holding up a pistol. The possibly-scarred woman looks ever so slightly amused, and that is certainly very like her. Everybody else is not happy to be here, or indeed, anywhere

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

One of the things to come from GamerGate was the gamification of torturing real, live women...hounding them out of their homes, making them look over their shoulders for years. It was treated as a joke, nbd, the work of a few bad apples--as all terrorism against women is--& that failure leads here.

Omigod, this is the most heartwarming story possible! Backpack (bear 89) is the son of the 2019 winner of Fat Bear Week, Holly (bear 435). In 2007, he injured his foot & a practice of riding on momma's Holly's back had a new meaning: he was mobility-restricted while it healed. So Holly moved him.
From DISCVR blog's Facebook page, a momma bear & a yearling cub on her back in the shallow water. I think the background has been swapped out, and I can't rule out some AI use there? God, Facebook has become the social media for AI slop : (

The title of the article, which I link below, is "How Bear 89 earned the name Backpack"

I think this thread hints to why truly unashamedly kinky/sex-positive spaces always feel inherently queer even though queer people certainly don't have a monopoly on being kinky/horny: any hedging on those feelings and words is appeasement to the heteronormative "low profile" for anything about sex.

the horrific cornell gang rape case has me thinking about emma sulkowicz who alleged she was raped as a student at columbia in 2014 and never got any justice. it has me thinking about the physical and mental weight young women are forced to carry while their safety is subsumed by male potential.

In the second dream, Lillian was standing inside the cold, unkindled fire pit with Father beneath a full moon. They were both naked and streaked with ash, decorated with magical signs and symbols. In the distance, the goats all screamed like they were being murdered.
Father looked at Lillian and smiled. Their faces were so similar. Lillian knew the look of pride and determination in his eyes was mirrored in her own. She smiled back.
Father stretched his arms into the air, as if to call something down. His muscles strained, and while his body did not change, his shadow grew and grew until it encompassed everything around it. Until Lillian was completely covered, and couldn’t see the moon anymore. When she turned around, fumbling in the sudden darkness, she realized Father was gone. Perhaps he’d never actually been there, and the shadow was hers the whole time.
Shivering, suddenly self-conscious about her nudity, Lillian called out for Ivy. But there was no response except the increasingly frantic bleating of the goats, and an ominous rustling in the trees and bushes that drew ever closer. There was nothing in the world but those sounds; the shadow couldn’t be penetrated by any light at all.

I wonder if this thing has a safeword. if it doesn't, it's either scripted or they're going to get their pants sued off if it does, then the experiment is really "how far can a roleplay scene go before someone safewords," which is a very different question (and still a legal risk if you push it)

my maximalist trans rights take is that genders should be treated like religions - all genders, not just trans people's. the state doesn't put it on your ID or have any say in who converts to another religion, but they do have to accommodate religious requirements like clothing or midday prayer.
