Just finished this and highly recommend it if you are in the mood for a romance that has enough weight to keep it grounded without ever feeling truly angsty. Anita Kelly is so good at balancing realistic fears and worries with gentle optimism and heart; this might be my favorite of theirs yet

At Mom’s for the next several days
Stainless steel kitchen sink, with various soap bottles and scrubbies, and dishes drying to the side. Above is the window, with a floral printed curtain thing across the top which doesn’t have any function beyond looking nice. There are flowers in vases on the windowsill: lilies of the valley, cornflowers, and a yellow iris. Out the window is the neighbor’s house

This bit gets me every time
Page from System Collapse by Martha Wells: I didn't want to do that. I wanted to save these fucking humans, who hid underground and watched all this media with their kids and had no idea of the kind of danger they were in.
I told ART-drone, We have to make them leave. We can't let this happen to them.
ART-drone said, We can't force them. It's against the University's charter. It added, It is immoral.
I said, It would be kinder to kill them.
Itwould not. Not unless they were in physical extremity with no hope of medical intervention, and even then, they would have to agree to it. Would it have been kinder to kill you, before you disabled your governor module?
I said, Yes.
ART-drone said, You know I am not kind.
In the room, Ratthi said, SecUnit, are you all right?

Okay, well, uh. I spent my afternoon looking at cool plants and flowers at the conservatory so here’s a few pictures of that instead
A room in the conservatory decorated to look like a South American jungle. There is a coconut coir sculpture of a sloth in the foreground and way in the background in a sculpture of a jaguar The entrance to the desert room at the conservatory, featuring lots of different types of cacti, some spiky agave, prickly desert dwelling trees, and a glass sunburst sculpture by Dale Chihuly hanging over it allThe Japanese garden at the conservatory. There is a pine tree, a Japanese maple, and a koi pond The turtle pond at the conservatory. There are a lot of water lily pads, cattails and other grasses, and, if you zoom in, a turtle resting on a log

Also, just finished this book today and liked it tremendously. It’s about queerness and identity and family, and the ways those we love can cause us harm, and help us heal (and how sometimes the harm and the healing comes from the same people). Will be thinking of this one for a while

New profile picture! Detail of a jousting shield I saw at the Met. I relate to the owl’s expression of haunted exasperation
A late 15th century jousting shield on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It depicts a rather haunted looking owl perched on a beam, with some flowers and a coat of arms below. Around it is a stylized banner which reads (in German), “Though I am hated by all birds, I nevertheless rather enjoy that.”Official Met description of previously noted jousting shield. It reads, “Jousting shield with owl. Wood, pigskin, burlap, gesso, and paint. Hungarian, made about 1500. Purchase, Bashford Dean bequest, 1969 (69.196). This shield bears the arms of the Tänzel and Rindscheit families and a motto in German, which humorously reads, ‘Though I am hated by all birds, I nevertheless rather enjoy that.’”

I feel it is important to note that the same exhibit, on all things Heinz, also featured this art piece. Tbh if they sold versions of this in the gift shop I would probably buy one

Vaguely horrifying historical Heinz mascots spotted at the museum today — they uh sure don’t make em like they used to!
Display case containing a grinning tomato headed figure wearing a tux, monocle, and top hat, gesturing to a keystone shaped Heinz branded analog clock. It is unsettling to behold A similarly attired tomato headed guy in a museum display case, now astride a bottle of Heinz ketchup and wielding a can of Heinz tomato juice. The figure is grinning in a nefarious manner and extremely unsettling to behold
