#TheVictorianBookoftheDead sing along! Only a Crape on the Door, Edward J. Abraham, 1882. Chorus: Only a crape on the door— A friend or a loved one no more; Just pause for awhile should you happen to see Only a crape on the door.
Cover art for Only a Crape on the Door sheet music showing a man and a couple in 1880s clothing on a sidewalk in front of a brownstone house with iron railings and window balconies. A man holding his hat and cane behind his back looks up at the black crape hanging on the door of the house. Sheet music for Only a Crape on the Door.
Complete text
Of the many sad scenes in the city, you see,
Of the poor who are wanting for bread;
Of the homeless who wander so sadly about.
Of the mourners who watch o’er their dead.
Of all these sad scenes, the saddest of all,
Should you travel this wide world all o’er;
Just pause in your journey should you chance to see,
Only a crape on the door.
[The mother whose heart is with grief laden down
The father, the husband, or wife
Imagine their feelings when they know no more
Will they see their loved ones in life,
‘Mid weeping and sorrow the sad rites are said
Then to the last resting place bore.
So remember all this when you happen to see
Only a crape on the door.
Just take to yourselves now the moral I teach
In my song as I sing it to you
Our best friends forget us when we’re hid away
No matter in life what we do
So do all you can to help your fellow man
Resolve to do right evermore
For we none of know, how sudden a blow
Would hang out a crape on the door
CHORUS

“Portrait of Caubvick, an Inuit Woman from Labrador” by Unknown artist – Oil on canvas / c. 1772 – Hunterian Museum, Royal College of Surgeons of England (London, UK) #WomenInArt #Inuk #HunterianMuseum #art #artText #arte #InuitWomen #LabradorInuit #IndigenousWomen #portraitofawoman #1770sArt
A young Inuk woman stands half-length against a muted landscape as she e turns to our left, looking beyond the picture, while her forearms cross calmly in front of her. Her warm brown garment has broad sleeves and substantial fur around the shoulders, and long strands of tiny beads descend on either side of her face. Her dark hair is drawn back beneath a beige band. Faint lines running from her lower lip across her chin depict facial tattooing. The unidentified artist models her face softly, with flushed cheeks and soft eyes, while subdued greens, browns, and blue-gray sky suggest a northern landscape beyond her.

Caubvick was a Labrador Inuk who traveled to England in 1772 with English trader George Cartwright. She was accompanied by her husband Tooklavinia, his brother Attuiock, Attuiock’s wife Ickongoque, and their young daughter Ickeuna. The five became objects of considerable curiosity in Britain’s social and scientific circles. Both Caubvick and Attuiock sat for full-length portraits by Nathaniel Dance in 1773. Four members of the group died after contracting smallpox, but Caubvick returned to Labrador, although the surviving historical record leaves her eventual fate uncertain.

Even the actual identification of the woman in this painting has a complicated history. The Hunterian now titles her Caubvick, but the portrait has previously been identified as other Labrador Inuit women, including Mikak and Ickongoque. Recent scholarship still describes the attribution as uncertain rather than settled. That distinction matters as the painting preserves an individual presence, but much of the documentation surrounding her was created by Europeans who classified, collected, and renamed Indigenous people within their own systems.

What remains striking is the specificity of the woman herself. Her hairstyle, beadwork, clothing, tattooing, folded arms, and distant gaze give the 1772 portrait a presence that exceeds its history as an ethnographic curiosity.

#FridayFrocks #Waistlines – a day dress, c.1825–30, demonstrates how fashionable waistlines had almost returned to the natural level by the mid-1820s. It is made from embroidered cotton, probably imported from India.
Cream-coloured cotton gown dating from c.1825-1830, displayed on a mannequin. The dress features all-over embroidered floral motifs, a high neckline, dramatically puffed sleeves tapering to fitted cuffs, and a gathered skirt. A wide green sash encircles the waist. A second image shows a close-up of the back bodice and sleeve, highlighting the embroidery, gathered fabric, and sash detail.

It is so interesting what a difference the mode of display has on the look of a garment. Standing up it almost looks like a completely new dress! The picture of Betty McInerney wearing the dress is also spectacular and gives the dress a totally other look as well. #Fashionhistory

The witches, all wearing black robes and pointed hats, are shown in various poses, some standing on the table while others are seated. The scene is illuminated by torches, casting a yellow glow on the figures and the surrounding trees. A small bat is also visible flying near the table.
