The parties of the extended "von der Leyen platform" (EPP, S&D, RE + Greens) are down to ~20% in the Latvian election – not a good result for pro-Europeans. (Admittedly, AS is one of the most centrist parties in ECR. But they still have chosen to sit in the same group as parties like PiS and AUR.)

I mean, the UK is not an optimal currency area anyway; and joining Schengen together with Ireland would solve many problems regarding the implementation of the GFA and also make travelling a lot easier for UK citizens. It's really not such a difficult case to make.

#OTD 120 years ago, Finland adopted a new electoral law, becoming the first European country to let women vote. 20 years later, in December 1926, Miina Sillanpää became the first 🇫🇮 female (vice)minister. Since 2023, October 1st is celebrated as Miina Sillanpää Day or Day of Civic Participation.

In climate policy, as in other areas, the argument "If I don't do it, someone else will" usually actually means: "If someone else doesn't do it, I will."

This is a bit embarrassing: 🇫🇮 PM Orpo has signed the "Frugals" letter demanding across-the-board #EUbudget cuts – although he had been campaining for *more* EU agriculture spending. Now he has distanced himself from the letter, and @hs.fi is wondering whether he was even aware what he was signing.

Nothing says "We urgently want an agreement by the end of the year" like a public ultimatum with maximum demands that you know are unacceptable for the other side. That's how MFF negotiations work.

I've seen this argument around a lot recently: Instead of a "firewall" against far-right parties, wouldn't it be better to just defend certain "principles", such as democracy or rule of law? Short 🧵 why I think that approach is misguided.

Food prices are high everywhere, straining people's ability to buy it; but people in the poorest countries spend a much higher % of their income on food (over 50% in some countries) - making geopolitical shocks and climate events that affect food prices especially harmful in those countries.

That juxtaposition of "a Europe of nation states, a Europe capable of being a genuine global power" is striking. Does he truly believe these things are positively correlated? How does he think such an EU would function? Or is it just that after so many years I still haven't got used to cakeism?

Remember when Ursula von der Leyen called nuclear a "clean, homegrown energy" in the #SOTEU? The EU imports *all* of its raw uranium - most (37%) from Canada, but also from Kazakhstan (20%), Russia (16%), and Uzbekistan (10%).

Majority voting allows groups of small member states to outvote the larger ones. National vetoes, on the other hand, entrench traditional power imbalances in favour of large states. But while member states were very aware of this in the past, it is hardly reflected in current #EUreform debates.
