Yes, AI for research is great, but the use case that gives me more satisfaction is teaching. Vibecoding figures and diagrams in Rmd/tikz is awesome. Making effective visualizations manually used to take me a lot of time.

Northwestern is hiring in quant methods (assistant level, tenure track) Please repost and share with those you think would be good candidates, thank you! polisci.northwestern.edu/about/facult... #psjobs #psjminfo #poliscijobs
Assistant Professor of Quantitative Political Methodology (Tenure-Track)
The Department of Political Science at Northwestern University invites applications for a full-time position in Quantitative Political Methodology at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to begin Fall 2027. We emphasize methodology with a strongly applied perspective: successful candidates will maintain an active, independent research program that includes methodological contributions in their own right, while also teaching quantitative research methods courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and applying those methods to substantive questions in their area of expertise. We are especially interested in candidates whose work bridges data-driven/computational approaches with design-based inference, though we welcome applicants making cutting-edge contributions in either of these traditions or in other areas of political methodology. Successful candidates' substantive research agendas may be in any area of political science or may cross boundaries; as with all Northwestern faculty, successful candidates will be expected to provide service to the department, the university, and the profession.Aerial photo of Northwestern's beautiful lakeside campus with political science's new building circled

New paper w/ @hannohilbig.bsky.social: we examine how local exposure to the Great Recession affected politics over the long run. Counties where unemployment rose more in 2007–09 moved toward Democrats, not the populist right. The shift remained visible in 2022.

Seems about right arxiv.org/pdf/2607.14623
I argue that multiverse analysis is highly suited to two undesirable uses: abdication of researcher’s responsibility for their conclusion and manufacturing of
doubt. A review of multiverse analyses published in 2025 provides tentative
empirical support that abdication of responsibility is present in the literature and
I mention anecdotal evidence that multiverse has been used for manufacturing
of doubt about Covid-19 precautions. To mitigate negative effects if multiverse
analysis becomes widely used I suggest the community adopts two conventions
for evaluating multiverse analyzes: evaluating multiverses by the single worst universe they contain and considering large size of a multiverse as a sign of weakness
rather than a praiseworthy achievement.

🗳️ Electoral Reform Alert 🗳️ Yesterday, the Italian Lower House approved a new electoral reform, now headed to the Senate. This would be the fifth major reform of the electoral system in Italy since 1993, and it could bring an even more radical right-wing party into the next government coalition. (1)

Absolutely. I always found the "peer review should be paid" point self-serving and a bit weird. The way I see it: regular, *deep* engagement with frontier work is a key part of our job, just like regular presentations. It's not a favor to strangers

Seeing several non-US online commentators justify (if not praise) threats of invasion, abductions, and now plain murders, just because they like Trump and dislike the left of their countries, I feel bad for when in grad school I thought Svolik was overstating the role of polarization.

In just over eight months, Berlin will hold its 20th state election since 1946. While its well known East West divide in voting behaviour is often attributed to the city’s former split into capitalist and socialist halves, these differences existed even before the city’s division. A thread. 🧵
