Before we get to “… then what”, we have to win first. So I wouldn’t count any chickens just yet. But even if the Dems win control of Congress, they’ll still be an opposition party. That means their job is to *oppose* — and that’s exactly what I hope they do. It’s long past time someone did.

And sometimes those polling surprises can be good ones. Not sure anyone had Biden winning AND Georgia getting 2 Democratic senators out of the 2020 election.

Those are really good questions. I wish I knew! It’s difficult to untangle Obama’s two terms from the rise of social media; would things have turned out differently if we’d remained in a mostly TV-dominated media landscape? 🤷‍♂️

Here’s what you wonder: if a lot of people voted for and supported Obama less b/c of his policies and more *because he was Barack Obama* — it was a mix of feeling, aspiration and identification with him, in the same way Trump’s voters are attached to him personally.

That had a huge impact not only on Congress, but also on state legislative seats across the country. Those 2010 and 2014 elections turned out to be so much more pivotal than we realized at the time. (I’m leaving aside the racial backlash to his presidency, but that’s obviously important too)

I’m not sure the tide actually turned all that much. I think he assembled a voting coalition in which a large enough part of it only turned out when he was on the ballot — he was such a once-in-a-generation political talent. But when he wasn’t on the ballot, enough of those voters stayed home.

Excellent quote. This article also pairs well with Backlash Presidents, which takes on the historical and institutional dimensions of this problem but shares the same basic conviction.

I do too, but I also remember there’s another side to this coin. I remember the rapturous crowds at Obama’s rallies in 2008, the adoring media coverage (which, tbf, was in large part due to the historic nature of his candidacy). Trump is basically the bizarro Obama of the right.

Yeah, when you have 330M+ people spread across a country as geographically big and culturally diverse as the U.S., barring extraordinary moments like 9/11, I’m not sure there’s anything we all have in common other than the economy. (And this goes all the way back to Reagan!)

Yeah, I hope I don’t sound like I’m sugarcoating things; I’m definitely concerned about KLB. Jackson has the best political ad team I’ve ever seen run a statewide campaign in GA, and unlimited $$$. Still, I haven’t seen anything in reliable polls that warrants “it’s all over” pessimism.

What is also very important is that I think generally dems are going to break a lot of supermajorities in states and take a lot of state houses. Government at the state level is about to really change.

Other than statistical noise, where would the forces that might lift his approval materialize from? The uncertainty due to his tariffs and Iran war will likely be with us for the rest of his term like a big wet blanket on the economy, keeping inflation ⬆️ and hiring ⬇️ for the foreseeable future.
