minotaur walks into a bar. bartender says, "you lost, friend". minotaur kills him in a single punch. "now there's no one to pour the beers", says another patron. minotaur tears the man in half. blood everywhere. no one seems to mind. she has found this room before. the labyrinth is playing games now

genuinely unfulfilled purpose will make you a way worse person to yourself and to everyone around you!! or you'll become an asshole online, which seems to be the case for a lot of people

"extremely precarious 24 year old autistic trans person called out as a sexual predator, hounded at their irl Pizza Hut job, because they once drew a comic where Dexter and Mandark from Dexter's Lab jerked each other off"

and other people are reacting like this because they have a (possibly very warranted!) Fear Response around online callouts/online mob justice, & this response is preventing them from understanding that this is a totally, absurdly different situation to like

Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 8h
the *most* sympathetic take i have on it is i think some people are reacting like this is a close, beloved friend of theirs (taking it personally, feeling conflicted, feeling like they know what's in his heart) because that's how some people get with certain kinds of celebrity,

yeah

Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 13h
(Which ties into one broader theme of the movie: can serious harm to others actually be rectified or redressed, and does feeling guilt/remorse/hesitancy about doing a bad thing actually “mean” much of anything outside oneself?)

His victim does forgive him (though it’s ambiguous if this is sincere or more to make him stop bringing it up & trying to apologize), but this is of absolutely no use or help to anyone.
150
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 13h
I think that movie attempts a sincere, nuanced depiction of a remorseful sex predator who only offended once. It makes clear that he’s pretty torn up over it. It also makes clear that the victim was much, much more fucked up by what he did, has suffered more.

Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 13h
okay this is the only thing I will say about this directly but I didn’t really know who this particular YouTube man was, so I’ve spent the past few days picturing the remorseful cop in Bugonia who molested the main character years ago, when he was his childhood babysitter

i guess at some point in some part of europe in the depths of history, women found men with a ton of body hair but scanty beards irresistibly sexy? i guess they also liked big foreheads
020
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 14h
i think i *could* develop the ability to grow a full beard after another, say, three to six years on T, based on my brother’s example, but why would the sides of our faces be the absolute last body part to Esau out, by several years. what’s the purpose.
120
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 14h
male body hair is a mystery. why can i grow a respectable amount of back hair but have to go with a goatee when i grow a beard because it only comes in as sparse partial sideburns on my cheeks/jaw.

when one is inclined to immediately forgive or give extreme benefit of the doubt to another person one doesn’t know who either has admitted to or has really strong evidence in favor of their having done something violently abusive & harmful (rape, attempted murder, child-beating, that sort of deal)
040
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 14h
I think it’s good to really interrogate oneself when one either feels bloodthirsty towards another person one doesn’t know bc of “something they did wrong” (esp. if ultimately not that harmful to others, like say having a very distasteful/embarrassing sexual fetish), OR

There Can be complicated situations where mercy may direct our conscience to help someone because, due to our lack of social safety nets, being widely disliked places them in real danger of starvation, homelessness, etc. But most of the time, simply being disliked doesn’t do that to people.

If people are protected from this type of consequence— if they or those around them think that they have a right not only to eg live free from harassment/bullying, but also to be universally liked, to be respected/admired, to be “engaged with,” to have no one be mad at them— they turn into Elon Musk

Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 15h
That might feel unfair sometimes, but it usually isn’t, and it is a good reminder of why not to do bad things, and a good reminder that your actions still exist even after you personally may have moved past them, disavowed them, etc.
1100
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 16h
A good example of a natural consequence is, if people find out about a bad thing you did, they might not like you anymore, and they might decide they do not want anything to do with you anymore.
1100
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 16h
I’m strongly anti-punishment and pro-consequences, broadly speaking. I don’t think people should be *punished*, either by authority or by social groups en masse, for virtually any wrongdoing shy of like war crimes. However, they also shouldn’t be protected from natural consequences of their actions.

the plainness with which this is put covers up a sort of powerless rage that you feel as a parent of a trans kid. it’s, to say the least, an alienating experience to see people bicker over the niceties of this or that pension policy when the party and the government has done this to your family
This Labour Government is the worst thing to have ever happened to trans children.
They have step by step dismantled every protection that supported my daughter. We have tried so hard to help her grow up with happiness and self-esteem through a childhood in an increasingly transphobic UK.
At every point when the Labour Government could have made something better, they have turned around and given her another kick.

once again there is a huge overlap in the rhetorical tropes of ableism and the rhetorical tropes of old-school homophobia and the rhetorical tropes of anti-transness-- i think it's interesting how these all echo and feed off one other

I'm going to say something that probably sounds naive or sentimental, but the one thing thing that really sticks with me about the backlash to generative AI is how many people are now calling attention to human effort in art, with all its rough spots and imperfections, as something to value

The Phantom of Heilbronn, also referred to as the Woman Without a Face, was a presumed female serial killer whose existence was inferred from DNA evidence found at 40 crime scenes across Austria, France and Germany from 1993 to 2009.

In March 2009, investigators concluded that the supposed serial killer did not exist, and the DNA belonged to a woman who worked at a factory that made the cotton swabs used for collecting DNA samples

struggling to decide if this is weirder if the internet person IS a good friend of the author, or if they're merely "famous enough" that the author decided it would be both edgy and legally/morally defensible to put them in the work as a POV character who Gets Got

then, also, people are scared of rejection from a sober person (or eg a person who's not their subordinate, of an appropriate age to partner with, etc). they're so scared of that rejection that the idea of pursuing someone on equal ground becomes unthinkable. and to that one i simply say: grow up

and that "people in the object category can't meaningfully harm/violate another person, they don't need to ask for consent or communicate clearly because they're already objects."
120
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
i think that's part of rape culture. women/non-men/some men sometimes are objectified; we learn both that "people in the object category don't or can't be asked about things, and their communication is less important, their consent is unimportant"
120
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
i think there is a fair amount of rape, and a LOT of plain bad/disappointing/hurtful sex, that happens not because the offending party is intentionally, knowingly hurting someone, but bc the offending party doesn't communicate or check in around sex, &/or doesn't discipline their libidinal urges.
120
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
i have unfortunately met a lot of men and a few women and nonbinary people who sincerely seem to not understand this, that even if they're REALLY HORNY and they think the other person PROBABLY likes them back the same way, they can just stop and go "oh, this person is really drunk (&c)" and WAIT.
130
Briar Ripley Page @flameswallower.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
it's good; i think an earnest umbrella form of this for "clueless nice guy" type rapists is: if you're not 100% SURE that your advances are wanted & that the object of your affection is currently capable of consent, do not have sex with that person, period. better blue balls than "you're a rapist."
