Transit Twitter: Under what circumstances should cities have a central intercity bus station vs peripheral bus stations (with subway connections) for each direction vs street stops?

Stockholm fare enforcement! Two unarmed women walk down scanning everyone’s ticket between stations. Eventually get to lady who (not subtly) tries to leave, corner her and write a fine before the next stop.

The Douglas Bay Horse Tramway has dedicated (ish) lanes and accepts contactless cards for fare payment onboard. On the other hand it only runs every 30+ minutes, and only in summer.

And when people look at US economic growth its never engaging with the boring stuff. "have giant integrated homogenous market" "have the state tax competition accidentally prevent S.European/East Asia/UK style parasite SME/Self-employed sector" "have lots of natural resources".

Everybody is reacting to this by talking about who should pay these costs, without questioning why the costs are what they are. Which is I guess the standard way to think about transit in the US. But just because we’re happy to be screwed by US commuter rail managers and unions doesn’t mean FIFA is.

Committing fraud to get paid when not working is a right that LIRR unions fought for and won, and the MTA cannot unilaterally take away this right that LIRR workers have had for decades. It is a sancrosanct, bedrock labor right, just like seniority, just cause, pension fraud and disability fraud.
