I asked you your favourite biscuit and you said 'oh a hob nob' or 'digestive' or 'bourbon' and you thought it would make me think you authentic and real but you should have said 'the poshest ones I can find for the posh ones are the best' as that is the truth you hide and now I know you are a coward

Pier Group. If you want to keep cool in a heatwave then maybe floating under the pier is just the ticket. You might get killed by a jet ski of course, but the view is unique, the sea is cool and the people above will wave and point so you can pretend you’re a b-list celebrity while enjoying a swim.

Well exactly. Although I think people get annoyed that there’s no indicators on a longship so it’s hard to work out where they’re going.

An echo of the time when this was a giant tidal estuary, leaving Caburn and its hill fort isolated above saltwater marshland. Saxon longships were able to sail right up to the hillside. These days they’d have trouble getting across the A27, roundabouts are tricky in a longship.

Hill Port. Mount Caburn (all 150m of it) floating on a sea of clouds. Part of an ephemeral archipelago of hilltops surrounding Lewes one morning last week.

This year it feels appropriate to spot the gobbler on the day that the weather has really turned autumnal. Yesterday was t-shirt and shorts, today I'm considering a move to southern Europe. The sea is still warm though, unseasonably so, still plenty of warmish dips ahead before the shivering begins.

According to the meteorological calendar autumn began on Sept 1st. If you prefer the astronomical equinox then it was the 23rd. I'd argue that the correct date is the day the boat arrives to gobble up Brighton’s swim buoys, leaving the sea a little less colourful and surprisingly empty until spring.

This was taken the end of 2025 but I haven't got round to making any prints until now (the season approaches!). So if you fancy a closer look at this natural marvel without spending an hour floundering about in the sea in February, you can pop into my gallery on the beach and see it on the wall.

They stay low, picking up the last few stragglers before finally settling down to roost under the helter skelter well after everyone else’s bedtime. Rebels.

Stragglers. At the end of the evening, after the sun has gone down and the rest of the murmuration has already called it a night, there's a small group of starlings that keep the party going a little further out to sea.

As someone who draws with real inks and pens and paint, but who also enjoys drawing digitally (particularly Procreate on the ipad these days, although I have drawn in Illustrator on my computer a lot, and routinely use Photoshop for compositing work)

I think some people have a knee-jerk reaction to concrete, that it’s irredeemably ugly. But the M5 motorway bridge in the early morning light is stunning, and starts my day with joy.

Thanks Alan. Yes very dry chalky soil, recently seed drilled so a very fine smooth texture too. And very direct over head kind of sunlight to add a slight unreality to it all.

In part a response to the trend towards hotter, drier weather on the Downs, but also an experiment with making photographs in light that might not usually be thought of as ‘interesting’, A different kind of puzzle to solve. Enjoyably abstract, a little unsettling.

Three fields and ten trees on the South Downs. One of a small series of pictures made as part my ongoing ‘Fieldwork’ series, all taken in the middle of bright sunny days with little cloud, no shadows and no more than two or three colours within the frame.

New woodwork. Two pictures from an exploratory wander through a recently rearranged woodland. A tangle of wind toppled trees and man made mountains of undergrowth. Messy in the best way. #sussex #southdowns

I see people standing too near the sea get hit by rogue waves here quite often (I work on Brighton beach). Very easy to get knocked off your feet and can be hard to get back up on steep shingle. Maybe more so after a few drinks.

A photograph taken on a calm day in the sea. It shows the very tops of a few vaguely recognisably Hove buildings just poking up above the gentle swell of the water.
