Last few days to order the only calendar made using a cargo bike to carry an underwater camera to a beach, followed by a sea swim, then more biking to a former fishing boat storage arch near a wrecked pier where the calendar was designed. Unique! www.brightonphotography.com/calendar

If you order things from @brightonphoto.bsky.social then some of the journey it makes from Brighton beach to your front door will be via cargo bike. All our post travels to the sorting office via bike, and local deliveries are done this way whenever I can. Bikes are great, ride more bikes.
A cargo bike, photographed silhouetted against a sunrise somewhere on the South Downs. A cargo bike loaded up with parcels, photographed outside my gallery on Brighton beach. A cargo bike on the South Downs on the way to Lewes. Green fields everywhere and sunshine and a big silly bike!

It’s Small Business Saturday! A day when small businesses like ours encourage people to #shoplocal and #shopsmall, but are instead consumed by the waves and never seen again. Have a good day everyone.

Good morning Brighton. It’s pretty grim down here today. The kind of wind and rain that blur the boundary between air and sea. Maybe it’s a day for online shopping on websites just like our one. Keep us busy packing and posting so we don’t accidentally venture outside. www.brightonphotography.com

Our 2025 calendar is in stock now. The perfect gift for sea swimmers and beach lovers everywhere. A different splash of Brighton and Hove sea for every month of the year, plus a full tide table to help find the perfect day for a dip. www.brightonphotography.com/brighton-sea-views-calendar/buy
A grid of twelve pictures, all of which are in our new calendar. They are all photos made in the sea just off Brighton and Hove during year round sea swims. They show the variety of colours, textures patterns in the sea, and the unique views of the city that can be found from this unusual perspective. The West Pier in Brighton, as seen from low down in the sea just after a winter sunset. There is a wave about to swallow the view of the pier, and the photographer. Brighton and Hove as seen from the sea on a muted and damp summer morning. Low cloud is hanging over the city and obscuring the tops of the tallest buildings. A view of Adelaide Crecent and Palmeira Square in Hove, as seen from the sea on a stormy looking day in early summer. The sea is a deep greeny blue and there are heavy grey clouds hanging over the square.

Good morning #Brighton. The sun is shining and it’s going to be a beautiful day beside the seaside. The starlings will be along later to say hello.
A photograph of a starling murmuration over Brighton’s Palace Pier. The starlings have, fleetingly, formed a shaped that looks a little like a heart.

Yes it’s real, no it’s not photoshopped.

No it’s not AI either.

It was real, for about 1/1000 of a second. There are some really terrible and obviously fake versions of a similar thing occurring out there but they’re not worth talking about.

A photograph of Brighton Palace Pier at twilight. The photograph was taken in the sea, and the multicoloured lights of the words ‘Brighton Pier’ are forming a little rainbow reflection in the sea beneath the pier.

Brighton’s starling murmuration over the Palace Pier, as seen from low down in the sea. Most of the pier is obscured by the swell. On the pier a crowd of people are watching the birds. This picture is the cover of our 2025 calendar.

A selection of #Brighton sea views. Familiar places seen from an unfamiliar angle.
A photograph of Brighton pier and starling murmuration as seen from the sea. A gentle swell is swallowing part of the view of the pier and a crowd of onlookers stands on the deck of the pier Brighton pier seen from the during a winter sunset. The sea is fairly calm, and reflecting the blue colour of the sky. The pier is picked out in crisp, warm sunlight. A photograph of Brighton seafront near the i360. The photograph is taken from the sea, with the lens half in and half out of the water. Beneath the sea is very green, above is the city skyline fading into a sea fret. Brightons west pier as seen from the sea during winter sunset. A wave is rolling in and partially obscuring the pier.

The beach webcam is an expressionist painting of what it's like here in Brighton today.
A screen grab of a Brighton beach webcam by the Palace Pier. It's so covered in rain and salty filth that you can't make out any details. Just fuzzy grey beach and pier shapes.

We don’t get much snow down here, but perhaps it’s just enough. Four pictures from our South Downs ‘Fieldwork’ collection.
Raviliesque. A photograph of several overlapping fields with a light dusting of snow on each. Some of the green crop is showing through in places and several small trees are dotted about. Plough lines show the shape of the land and make it look a little like a sketch. Easterlies. A photograph of a single tree in an empty, white, snowy landscape. It’s a typical windswept Sussex hawthorn, the shape of which gives you some hint as to the prevailing wind. Vinyl. A photograph of a pair of trees at the edge of a snowy field. There is a light dusting of snow on the land, leaving a small amount of colour, but making it all look a bit like a sketch. The shape and texture of the field reminded me of a piece of warped vinyl record. White Walkers. A photograph of a single snow covered hawthorn in a very snowy landscape. Everything is very white. In the distance two little people can be seen walking away from us.

From my Horse series. I worked with these horses for over a year before I photographed them. This is Toby - a very nervous horse that I worked closely with in order for him to gain my trust - all photos are taken in a field & close up - I am lying on the floor next to him. It was freezing rain.
A black and white photograph of a grey horse who is staring directly into the camera lens. The horse is centred in the image and his ears are pricked forward and has dark black eyes and nose. A black and white photograph of a grey horse grazing. The photo is taken from the ground looking up - the horse's head is cropped at the edge of the image. The sky is black but the sun is highlighting the white main and his back.A black and white photograph of a grey horse - the horse is cropped so that all that is seen is his neck, head and a small part of his body. The sun is highlighting the top of the horses neck and the sky is a brooding grey behind. a black and white photograph of a grey horse - the horse is cropped and in the bottom right hand corner- all you can see is his turned neck (he is turning away from the camera) and part of his face and ear. The sky is grey.

A beautiful end to the day down here. Surprisingly colourful after such a cold, grey day.
A photograph of the sunset down at the West Pier in Brighton. The sky is full of colour, reflected in a calm sea. I’ve seen hundreds of colourful winter sunsets down here but they are still wonderful to see.

No snow down here, but how about some frosty pictures from the South Downs to start this chilly day.
Filigree. A photograph taken in the woodland of the South Downs. Silver birches festooned with hoar frost above a carpet of orange bracken. Cold Snap. A photograph taken in the woodland of the South Downs. A single birch tree sitting in a frost woodland. The tree and surrounding bracken are in a pool of warmer morning light and thawing slowly, the background is still shaded and blue. Underscore. A photograph taken in the woodland of the South Downs. A willow tree and bulrushes in dense freezing fog. Every detail of the hanging trees branches is covered in hoar frost and the dark heads of the bulrushes dance across the bottom of the frame like a musical score.

Good morning from a chilly Brighton beach. Snow in the forecast for the south tomorrow. It won’t get to us down here on the coast, but what if it did? (It won’t) (But it might…)
A photograph of one of Hove’s promenade shelters on a snowy day. Brighton beach covered in snow. The Passacaglia sculpture is framing the distant west pier. Hove beach huts and their pastel coloured doors, photographed on a winter day with the prom totally covered in fresh snow.

New! Fresh at the gallery this weekend is the new book from Brighton & Hove Calendar creator NK Swallow. Hundreds of pictures from 20 years photographing the joyous people and places of our seaside city. Favourites from the days of North Laine Photography and loads of unseen gems from the archive.
The cover of ‘The Joy of Being Brighton’ by NK Swallow. The picture is of a person jumping off the pier in a highly inadvisable way.A picture from the book, two men sitting on the ground looking bored with a sign saying ‘world record attempt at apathy’ around one of their necks. A picture from the book. A street artist is painting a very basic stick figure picture of a woman. She can’t see what he’s done and looks a bit apprehensive. The picture also says ‘marry me’ on it. A picture from the book. A woman with blonde hair and blue sunglasses blows a kiss toward the camera. In the background are several other women who all look identical to the first.

Good morning Brighton! It’s another beautiful day down here on the beach, but how about a few pictures from the woods to get you into the autumn mood.
Fringe. A picture taken in Stanmer Park near Brighton. An avenue of old beech trees with autumn coloured leaves hanging down from above. Park Life. A picture from Stanmer Park near Brighton. Yellow leaves in a foggy beech wood above a floor carpeted in orange leaf litter. Overhang. A picture from Friston Forest in East Sussex. A photo taken through a dense canopy of autumn colour. The famous holloway at Halanker in West Sussex. A sunken path through the trees, with sunlight poking through and lighting the path beneath.

Thanks for all the follows on our first day here. It was a beautiful afternoon the beach, and a day of almost entirely sea based picture sales. Here’s three of them.
Belle Vue. A picture of the Birling Gap end of the Seven Sisters cliffs as see from the sea. Blurry blue sea and a glimpse of the cottages and Belle Vue Loghthouse above.Moonrise Kingdom. A picture of Brighton’s West Pier as seen from the sea. The moon is rising into a twilight sky, and little reflections of it can be seen in the water.Headlight. Beachy Head and the top of the red and white lighthouse disappearing behind a gentle swell.

It is all sorts of serene and beautiful down here in Brighton today.
The view out to sea from Brighton beach right now. The sea is mirror flat under an overcast sky. Not much colour, but not much noise either. A perfect November day.

This is us. It is definitely always this sunny down here.
A photograph of the inside of Brighton Photography Gallery. It is a sunny day (like usual of course) and the sunshine is streaming through the windows and lighting up the space in a warm and wonderful way. Like usual. It never rains here, FACT.
