I have never raced neck-and-neck with a rainstorm the way I did on my ride home today. I was very literally at the leading edge of the rain. Whenever I’d slow down, it would catch up. If I turned, it would catch up. I was going a little too fast for safe city commuting, but what a BLAST 🚲🌧️

Navigating a temporary subway shut-down is worse than the chronic, daily miserable driving conditions? I don't love the term, but this is "carbrained" thinking. You may be in control of your vehicle, but you can't control traffic. The average Boston driver lost 79 hrs sitting in traffic in 2024.

From an article in the Boston Globe entitled "‘A period of suffering.’ What it’s like when a 20-minute Red Line commute takes more than two hours."

There are many miserable commutes into Boston. You might find yourself trapped on I-93, brake lights stretching to the horizon. Or plodding along on the Tobin, where the destination is so close, yet so far. Or creeping endlessly into bottlenecked tunnels on the Mass. Pike. Day after day.

But things could be worse. You could be relying on the Red Line, where for the next week and a half, a trip into Boston that once took less than 20 minutes can now take more than two hours.

“I think it’s crazy,” said construction worker Melvin Saunders, 67, as he boarded a shuttle bus toward Boston at Alewife station Tuesday morning. “I think all shutdowns are crazy.”

When I look at heatwave forecasts, I focus on that overnight low, like the shocking 27 C for NYC. "Tropical nights", when temps stayed above 20 C / 68 F, drove much of the mortality during past European heatwaves, and 2021 Pacific NW heat dome. Inability to cool off overnight is the silent killer.

Veteran no/subpar AC haver here, these are all good tips! Don't forget to EAT, that's one that gets me. I lose my appetite in the heat, but low blood sugar + heat is really not good. Put plenty of things to graze on around you! Veggies/hummus, yogurt/granola, charcuterie board, etc.

For many years, someone has been using plywood to try to make certain unlevel/muddy bridge transitions on my commute path better. Today, I MET Mysterious Ramp Man 😱 another bike commuter was thanking him as I rolled up - this dude is a CELEB 🤩
