Dumb as hell. Malone is hyperbolically repulsive as the Town Tramp mand Stack gives one of the worst performances I have ever seen (seriously)
as the weak drunk loser son of an oilman.
Whenever either of them was on screen I was hoping something terrible would happen to them.
Unwatchable.
Not a fan of mousy, earnest Bacall, either. Doesn't suit her.
The only reason this movie gets two stars instead of one is because of the almost comically eye-popping colors-the most color color movie that ever colored. Sirk absolutely drunk on melodrama and color. That's worth at least a star.
Can't believe the guy that made this also made
ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS, another lushly colorful melodrama starring Rock Hudson that manages to go right in every way that this movie goes wrong.

Did Simenon get worse as he aged? This is the first Maigret novel I’ve read that I don’t really enjoy. Skeletal plot, mostly banal dialogue, no real atmosphere. Written in ‘70s. 😢 Looks like this was 74 of 75 Maigret books (!) I think he was tired
