I work at a predominantly Latine-serving organization and I have to keep reminding them that Haiti is part of Latin America. It’s obviously anti-Blackness which still remains insane to me because like almost half of Latin America is Black whether they speak Spanish, Portuguese, English or French.

Most of the people who cleaned up the debris, dirt, and sifted through the painful aftermath at ground zero were undocumented workers. Many of them got cancer. Most have PTSD. Many of them now live in fear of ICE deportations.

I am once again pointing out that even if Waymo cars are individually "safer than a human driver," what they will do to the transportation landscape will prolong the unsafety of our streets, leading to more harm in the long run than if we went all-in on traffic calming with no robotaxis at all.

The last two lines of this May New York Times profile of Hayden Panettiere are so haunting. I always flinch when stories of addiction and recovery are narrativized and commodified as quickly as hers was. What a tragic story, with too many dirty hands. RIP.
Before we said goodbye, I asked Panettiere how she feels today, having relived her past triumphs and traumas, and put them on paper for the world to witness.

“I just can’t believe I made it through alive,” she said. She was still pacing.

I wrote about CAMP MIASMA, its playful eroticism, the trans killer in horror, Jane Schoebrun's intelligence in suggesting the spaces between fantasy and identity, and their preoccupations with a necrotic nostalgia for all things analog. www.patreon.com/willowcately... (no paywall)
a still image from Camp Miasma of two women embracing in a magical snowy forest. The texture is like Guy Maddin meets Lisa FrankJane Schoenbrun has become an easily recognizable figurehead of the New Trans Cinema, because they have focused so intently on creating a cinematic language of disassociation and dysphoria. Richard Brody called them a “poet of solitude”, but any trans viewer will tell you that the solitude of their prior films is born from a multitude of factors; brought on by feelings of discomfort in ones own identity they were assigned at birth, and the sociopolitical anxieties that breed ambient, and sometimes explicit forms of violence upon trans people. I Saw the TV Glow’s Owen (Justice Smith) is frozen for this reason, but because Schoenbrun obfuscates the touchstones of cliche trans narratives by filtering them in genre elements, their films can also be saying more than just what is easily understood by trans viewers who recognize the similarities between their characters and our lives. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is like this too, and is still driven by questions of bodily discomfort, while also alluding to the way that cinephilia can disorient queer people who take in bad images—like that of the transphobic serial killer—and find recognition due to a paucity of other images. Schoenbrun’s excellence has always been akin to a magic trick of serving two audiences at once: the trans viewer who picks up the coded language of their pictures, while also, at the same time, presenting a narrative that could be legible for an audience who is not trans. We saw so much writing about I Saw the TV Glow from cisgender critics who believed it was about the perils of nostalgia, and analog preoccupations, and many of those findings were true, but the trans response to the film was treated as an almost holy experience by many who had never encountered a film that spoke so deeply to their experiences before.

I don’t want this point to be lost in the discourse. Going digital-only means inequity for people who cannot afford internet or constantly purchasing new games. Libraries provide opportunities for people to experience games they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford, and that will be lost.

If you're a gay man, and you look at people who identify as queer, NB or trans, and you don't understand that their struggles are our struggles, then you're useless to any progressive moment. The arguments from this prim prisspot were bad when they were popular in the mid-'90s and they're worse now.
