Puffins are social, so to attract them to Maine's rocky islands, National Audubon's Seabird Restoration Program put out decoys to attract real birds. This puffin is trying to fit in with his new friend by standing on one leg. Seabird peer-pressure can be intense. (📷: Robert F. Bukaty)
"An Atlantic puffin on Maine's on Eastern Egg Rock appears to imitate a decoy on July 9 by standing on one leg. Decoys were used to lure the gregarious birds ashore after they were re-introduced to the island following a 100-year absence."

Celebrating the recent release of their queer take on Austen, @lindzmcleod.bsky.social walks us through the genesis of the book. britishfantasysociety.org/from-pen-to-...
On a white background is the text: From pen to print. Lindz McLeod's The Unlikely Pursuit of Mary Bennet. Lindz is pictured at bottom right; she is a white woman with short blonde hair, wearing a black t-shirt and a dinosaur necklace. The cover of her book is above her; it's an illustration of two Regency-era ladies looking back at each other, and is in shades of pink, blue and yellow.

In this monthly column, we pose your questions to an expert in a specific field of speculative fiction. This month, Steve J Shaw of @blackshuckbooks.bsky.social tackles questions about indie publishing asked by BFS members in our dedicated Discord channel. britishfantasysociety.org/ask-an-exper...
A mainly text-heavy graphic says:
Ask an expert.
Indie publisher Steve J Shaw
Editor, publisher, typesetter, and designer Steve J Shaw is the proprietor of Black Shuck Books - an indie press nominated for many BFSs in its time.

Steve is pictured in the centre. He is a middle-aged white man with long hair pulled back, and a beard. He wears black-rimmed glasses and a black t-shirt, and looks directly to the camera.

You trek down an overgrown path, shrouded in shadow and chrosued by crickets, until finally you encounter the wishing well. You throw in a gold coin. Minutes pass. A pair of golden eyes glitter in the dark, and a mermaid appears. She offers to grant your wish... Do you trust her?
A stone well sits among an overgrown thicket of leaves and flowers at night. A mermaid lounges inside and considers you with golden, unimpressed eyes.

So excited to share this week's interview with @alixeharrow.bsky.social! We talked about Starling House, buried histories, and the long shadow of the Gothic genre. www.patreon.com/posts/interv...
A photo of the cover of Starling House. A Black background is covered by starlings, some carrying flowers and keys in their beaks."....the southern gothic in particular is saturated with this deep and sincere love for the south itself: the land, the heat, the people. In some of the genre’s lineage that love is a sort of cloying nostalgia for an imagined paradise (ew!), and in others it’s a more complex, open-eyed love. It’s love-despite, and I guess that’s how I’ve always felt about Kentucky. And maybe, how many people feel about their homes."
