I work with abortion providers in Colorado. One of them had a patient whose water broke at 4 1/2 months, was told by a Houston hospital they couldn't help her until she went into labor or went septic, so *she got on a plane & flew to Denver mid-miscarriage*. There's no respectful disagreement here.

To expand on this: Bigotry isn't a result of an innocent misunderstanding, or not having all the facts. It's not a choice made rationally, defeated with a rational argument. Bigotry is a self-protective, foundational belief used to help make the world make sense to them. Debate won't change that.

My genuine best advice for anyone who wants a window into a specific school’s sexual violence response is to ask if they have an ATIXA membership. ATIXA is a consulting group that sells a lot of schools their sexual violence materials.

Resist the temptation to do that. The reality is that sexual violence is a problem at every university in the US. National comparisons aren’t hugely useful. And even the “best” school isn’t safe enough for women.

On the opposite side of the coin, we also see reporting rates explode after high-profile cases. People like alumni who are angry about the school’s institutional betrayal file reports about things that happened to them years ago. Faculty may also be more inclined to file mandatory reports.

One of the biggest ones is trust in the Title IX system. A school with a really low reporting rate isn’t necessarily a place where violence doesn’t occur, but rather a place where students know they will be mistreated if they come forward.

In general, researchers find that a school’s Clery Act reported numbers of sexual assaults is NOT reliable enough to use as an indicator of the rate of sexual violence on campus OR the rate of reports made to Title IX.
