I see Shane Jones is telegraphing the same 'Great Replacement' narrative, & lie Christchurch terrorist used to justify massacre of 51 Muslims in March 2019. This is not political debate. This is violent extremist rhetoric fuelling racism, endangering communities, & ripping apart social cohesion.
Quote attributed to Jones notes: "Don’t let these Green dreams drive us into poverty and drive all our young people away to Australia, only for new migrants coming from the third world to replace our own children and grandchildren. That’s not putting New Zealanders first.”

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?

I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.

Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.

It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

Kia ora e te whānau,

📢 This post is on InternetNZ Board elections 📢

✅️ Voting System ✅️
InternetNZ uses a form of STV (single transferable vote), which is also called choice voting.

You will get to vote for your preferred candidate. That means you list them from 1 (preferred) to 13 (least preferred).

Once the top candidate is elected, all their votes for 2nd preferred candidates will be reallocated for election. Helping to elect the 2nd person.

✅️ Rank your preferred candidates from 1 (preferred) to however many you want to vote for.
❌️ Do not allocate numbers to candidates who you absolutely do not want to see on the InternetNZ Board. I.e. they're racist or bigots etc.

Candidacy recommendations, my system is as below:
✅️ I would vote and recommend them
❔️ I dont know enough about this candidate
❌️ I would not vote for them

✅️ Adam Hunt
✅️ Bianca Grizhar
❌️ Brynn Neilson
❌️ Douglas Brown
✅️ Dylan Reeve
❌️ Jonathan Ayling
✅️ Kaye-Maree Dunn (Ngāpuhi, Te Rarawa, Ngāti Mahanga, Kahungunu)
❔️ Maureen Hilyard
✅️ Peter-Lucas Jones (Te Aupōuri, Ngāi Takoto and Ngāti Kahu)
❔️ Roger Brown
❔️ Seth Kenlon
✅️ Suzie Tingley
❔️ Toby Cunliffe-Steel

Overall I'm not going to tell you how to vote and if there is a candidate you know really well that you want to vote for kei te pai.

But this is a guide for those that may be new to InternetNZ and don't know the environment well. From someone who has spent over a decade involved in some form with InternetNZ.

The FSU's amendments would transform #InternetNZ from embodying Te Tiriti partnership, & centring Māori to treating cultural inclusion as optional - rejecting its constitutional framework since 2018, & enduringly undermining its ability to serve all communities in NZ. The FSU poses a serious threat.
Table showing impact of proposed constitutional amendments on InternetNZ across eight governance elements.
Te Tiriti Partnership: Current embedded interpretation clauses would be completely removed, violating 2018 commitments and damaging legitimacy as .nz steward.
Māori Governance Participation: Minimum three Māori Board members plus appointed member requirements eliminated, enabling complete exclusion of tangata whenua.
Cultural Competency: Mandatory Board expertise in te ao Māori reduced to optional "diversity", preventing effective Māori collaboration.
Accountability Mechanisms: Multiple grounds including reputational harm weakened with "disrepute" provisions removed, eliminating recourse for Treaty relationship damage.
Dispute Resolution: Tikanga-based principles and Māori mediation replaced with generic Western model, removing culturally appropriate pathways.
Leadership Structure: Co-Chairs with Māori representation replaced by traditional Chair/Deputy model, eliminating structural partnership.
Member Obligations: Protection of Society's reputation narrowed to rule compliance only, permitting public undermining of Treaty commitments.
Charitable Objects: Treaty-centred governance support undermined by structural changes, preventing effective Māori collaboration without guaranteed Māori presence.

There are a dozen amendments proposed by the FSU. I studied them in order to understand FSU's designs on InternetNZ through institutional capture, & hollowing it out. Each amendment is, in my reading, worse than the one before it.
Table analysing how proposed constitutional amendments would impact InternetNZ's governance framework across eight constitutional elements.
Te Tiriti Partnership moves from embedded interpretation clauses to complete removal, violating 2018 commitments and damaging legitimacy as New Zealand's domain steward.
Māori Governance Participation shifts from requiring minimum three Māori Board members plus expertise requirements to no requirements, enabling complete exclusion of tangata whenua.
Cultural Competency changes from mandatory Board expertise in te ao Māori to optional "diversity" considerations, preventing effective Māori collaboration.
Accountability Mechanisms weaken from multiple grounds including reputational harm to limited provisions without "disrepute" clauses, removing recourse for Treaty relationship damage.
Dispute Resolution replaces Tikanga-based principles and Māori mediation with generic Western models only, eliminating culturally appropriate pathways.
Leadership Structure abandons Co-Chairs with Māori representation for traditional Chair/Deputy model, removing structural partnership.
Member Obligations narrow from protecting Society's reputation to rule compliance only, permitting public undermining of Treaty commitments.
Charitable Objects lose Treaty-centred governance support through structural changes, preventing effective Māori collaboration without guaranteed Māori presence in decision-making.

The InternetNZ AGM falls on Thursday. It's a very consequential one. To secure institution's ability to serve all New Zealanders, members must vote down proposed changes to InternetNZ's constitution by the Free Speech Union (FSU) - published on their website. If passed, InternetNZ won't be the same.

#InternetNZ has just sent out direction on how voting will work, reconfirming that in order to vote on motions you must be present IN THE MEETING at the AGM. So if you're an InternetNZ member who is eligible to vote PLEASE REGISTER AND ATTEND THE AGM!!
How voting on motions will work
This year, the AGM has 24 motions (including 15 Member Motions) submitted for voting. All Members’ Motions will be presented in the sequence shown on our website, where you can review the precise wording of each Member’s Motion and access any supporting information.

Voting on motions will take place in real time using the Zoom-integrated Mi-Voice voting app.

On 31 July, Eligible Members who have registered for the AGM, will receive a Unique Voter Code (UVC) directly from Mi-Voice, which will allow each member to access the app during the AGM.

Results will be shared live during the AGM.

Ordinary Motions require a simple majority (over 50%) of votes cast for each motion.

Constitutional Motions require a two-thirds majority of votes cast for each motion.

If you have been a member for less than 3 months, you are not eligible to vote on motions at the AGM and won’t receive a Unique Voter Code (UVC). Eligible members who don’t register before the cutoff date will also not receive a UVC.
