That must have been a nice view, I'm actually jealous! I'm going to tag @thilokuehne.bsky.social, as I think that should be Croatian territory

But in any case, thank you for notifying us of what you noticed! Good thing you have better eyes than us 👀

In the end we confirmed it as a tornado, we had more elements for one (including the TDS) than just downburst damage in that specific area. Unfortunately the TDS area is of very hard access, so we'll have to hope for some useful highres satellite imagery to see what happened there

How nice, one of the hardest places to get reports from!

This QLCS is becoming my "favorite" event of the year. After @bramvantveen.bsky.social's radar report and getting a video from renowned storm chaser Dean Gill, I think we have found tornadoes n. 5 and 6, which is quite the achievement for Italy!

Federico Pavan @federicopavan.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Welp, it's a protected natural reserve area, so no droning for us. Their pages didn't mention anything about storm damage, so we'll probably have someone take a walk there and see if they can find anything
111
Federico Pavan @federicopavan.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
This will definitely have a follow-up! We should be able to get a drone up over the river to see if there still is damage there, but there seems to be a 4 km path from where the TDS is up to the surveillance footage location (an impacted car wash) nonetheless!
111
Federico Pavan @federicopavan.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Well, now we have very suspicious surveillance footage from that area
110
Federico Pavan @federicopavan.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Thank you Bram! Unfortunately it's an area on the Isonzo river, so that would explain the lack of reports. But that also means that the damage should still be there, if it's actually there (from Sentinel imagery there seems to be nothing out of place). Let's see if we manage to send someone!

And then finally on the 28th, arguably the worst day of the year, featuring three (main) supercells producing very large to giant hail and violent downbursts, in some areas overlapping the two kinds of events. Emilia-Romagna got its new regional hail size record at 13 cm as well

On the anniversary of one of the worst severe weather events ever known in central Italy in 1890, another event occurred, producing at least four (luckily weaker) tornadoes between Umbria and Lazio

Federico Pavan @federicopavan.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
Then the day after we got one of the most interesting events I've worked so far: a long-lived QLCS producing multiple tornadic mesovorticies (4 tornadoes confirmed) across north-central Italy, one of these with an IF2 tornado which impacted the Mantua province

Hello! I'm back once again! We've had quite a rush of severe weather lately, with multiple wave of large events after a semi-uneventful first half of August. On the 20th in fact, we started a nasty series of events, with that one peaking with the first confirmed tornado in Turin since 1949

The tornado damage path from August 19 between Georgenthal and Ohrdruf in Germany is clearly visible from the air. Over a distance of nearly 5 km and width of more than 500 m in places, extensive damage to trees and buildings can be seen.

Then in 1935, the strongest known tornado in Genova: a half-mile wide waterspout made landfall destroying part of the port where 5 workers were killed and some train cars were lofted off their track, and then headed into the city destroying homes (IF3+ rating) and killing a child. 62 were injured

OTD in 1890, a furious outbreak of thunderstorms produced at least two rare strong tornadoes between east Tuscany and west Umbria, killing 10 people and injuring over 60 more. A train was also derailed by a possible third tornado. The event went all the way up to the Po Valley

A severe weather and #tornado outbreak occurred on 19.08.2026. The German Tornado Expert Group (TOREX) is working intensively on the analysis of this event. DWD is also part of TOREX, jointly analyzes the large amount of info available. A first overview map showing the results has now been created.

The #tornado outbreak on 19.08.2026 was a day to remember with a classic setup (High shear low CAPE, HSLC). SRH was high and also concentrated on the lowest km. In addition LCL were low.

There are probably more #tornado cases to come. Many reports can already be found in the WarnWetter app. Some are probably fake, but there is a notable clustering from Rhineland-Palatinate into Hesse. And there are at least two interesting images from near Wetzlar.

The only good thing is that we didn't have deaths included in the massive amounts of damage we had (although two people died in a car accident partially caused by one of the storms), so overall it could have gone much worse... but still, I did not appreciate the similarity to July 2023 we had

Another impressive thing was the severity of some of the downbursts: some had gusts over 130 km/h, with western Garda Lake going up to 156.9 km/h on 17 July, others caused damage that can be rated as IF2 as farm buildings and outbuildings partially collapsed due to the wind
