Toronto got lucky with this storm on Sep 2. An HP supercell through the city with isolated large hail and downburst winds, but didn't quite have its low-level rotation together until it got to New York where it produced EF0 and EF1 tornadoes. Given the environment that day, far worse was possible.

I deal with broadcast media across Canada, and almost without fail they'll provide interview times in standard time even when they're in daylight time i.e. EST instead of EDT. For such a time-focused business it's surprising. Why not just just 'eastern time' ET? Maybe a media friend can explain :-)

Canada recently lost one of its legendary meteorologists - Jim Bruce, age 97. Started his career in 1948 and rose to great heights - head of AES (now MSC), established the flood warning system for Ontario, a leader at the WMO, Nobel winner with IPCC members, Order of Canada, and much much more. I've seen a lot of waterspout photos and video, and have taken some myself, but have never seen this quasi-steady state 'corkscrew' structure before. I think it's rare with tornadoes over land as well. @chrisknoxphotog.bsky.social captured something special with this one over Lake Ontario!

Major comms outage at the US National Weather Service on Tuesday affected warnings. Key line: "The outage meant that severe thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado warnings were significantly delayed in reaching the public, except via NOAA Weather Radio". FYI, Canada cut Weatheradio back in March.

Big milestone met for Environment Canada today as it launches its long-awaited storm-based thunderstorm and tornado warning system. It's mostly going to affect warnings received via cell phone, but it should substantially reduce the number of warnings for people not in the direct path of the storm.

In Toronto this morning (Thursday) the sky looks slightly less hazy, but the surface pollution levels are actually twice as bad as yesterday. And the worst I can remember in 20 years of living here. If you have to breathe outside, wear a mask! 😷

An interesting case study yesterday - smoke pouring in from the fires in NW ON changed the potentially disastrous outcome in QC. Storms did form but their intensity was severely dampened by the smoke, limiting instability and increasing the strength of the cap. Many remained elevated. 1/2

This morning's outlook from CPIQ increases the 'high' area size and adds a tornado icon to the 'moderate' area. All good. But if this environment is not 'extreme', I'm not sure what is. The one fly in the ointment is the amount of smoke drifting over the area - that could reduce severity. #meteoQC

I hope Quebec is ready for what is coming at them tomorrow weather-wise. There is agreement among models/runs that supercell thunderstorms are likely over a large area along the St. Lawrence Valley. Really intense supercell with strong rotation heading southeast toward Waldheim, SK, north of Saskatoon. Tornado warned, and chasers have reported tornadoes with the storms in this area. Very large hail also possible. Take shelter immediately if in the path of this storm. #SKstorm
