Both these cells have the chance of producing hail 2-3cms diameter, as well as a tornado. A funnel cloud has been reported from Gloucestershire recently, which may have been a tornado. Please let us know if you hear of anything. Thanks, Paul.

With backed low-level flow ahead of these thunderstorms, and reasonable low-level shear/low cloud bases, a tornado is possible as they continue to drift in a general northerly direction, especially around Gloucs et al. Paul.

TORRO extends its sympathy to those affected by the tornado that struck Pomas, Aude on Mon 24 Aug. Our thoughts are with those who lost homes or were injured, and with emergency responders on the ground. This event underscores the need to understand severe convective storms in NW Europe.

Hayley Lennox sent us this brilliant picture of a funnel cloud from Bagillt in Wales, seen around 11:15 BST this morning. Conditions today make it likely that more places have seen more funnel clouds - if you have seen any, please do report them to us! ~ Jamie 😁

We've seen well over 50 reports of land devils over the course of this summer - the next few days look particularly ripe for further to occur considering the very dry conditions and high temperatures (upwards of 35/36ºC) forecast.

Hi all We have had reports of land devils over the last few weeks, some particularly strong (one looks to have caused damage in Swindon a few days ago) and are appealing for more information of any other reports you may have. Tomorrow may be particularly ripe in the south for further reports.

Thunderstorms are likely to develop more widely overnight, and could crop up just about anywhere (though inevitably some places will avoid them, especially, not exclusively, towards the SE). If you come across any large hail or wind damage do get in touch with us through our website. Thanks!

Thunderstorms are developing in Devon and Somerset, moving ENE broadly, and are expected to affect parts of Wales, as well as Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, over the coming hours. Associated risks of large hail, strong wind gusts and a small risk of a tornado with these.

Sharon from Eastbourne has sent in this nice picture of a funnel cloud above Shinewater Park from a passing shower, taken yesterday at 11:24 BST. Light winds and sea breeze convergence likely helped it to form as the shower intensified.
A funnel cloud can be seen stretching from a black cloud above, with shrubbery seen below it

Message from the TORRO team.
Image reads: Hi all - we've been issuing forecasts for severe convective weather, on a regular basis, for the last 20 years or so. Through the period, the long-term average is that around 50% of the tornadoes which have occurred in the UK have developing within a TORRO forecast.

Early-on, TORRO was generally quite unique in issuing such forecasts, but that has changed over the years, with various outlets and individuals offering such forecasts. At the same time, the appetite from sections of the media to consume such forecasts, and then dramatically overplay them, has grown rapidly.

It's at the stage where I feel that such overblown news stories could be damaging to TORRO. Also, it takes time and effort to produce such forecasts, and - whilst not onerous - it's not always possible to be able to give as much consideration to them as we'd like.

Thus, TORRO will stop issuing such forecasts until further notice.

Of course, TORRO will continue in its investigations and collation/documentation of tornado and other severe weather reports. Thus, please continue to report them to us!

Paul.
