When they get back in power, Democrats need to go all-in on higher education. We need a campaign of reinvestment in public universities across the country that makes the Morrill Land-Grant Act look like nothing by comparison *and* a GI Bill of Rights-style program of tuition grants.

I LIKE Taylor Swift’s music. I think she is a generational talent musically and lyrically. I also think no one can withstand that level of fame and money and remain normal or, more importantly, creative. If you have a BILLION dollars who can restrain you; without constraints how can you create?

Similarly - I don’t think she is actually using AI to write her lyrics or music. But it FEELS like someone asked a robot to generate a Taylor Swift song and it did so based on her previous work. It’s a retread of already well traveled ground. It’s not really thoughtful or new or surprising.

Before I scrolled to the second post in this thread I thought “huh interesting, this reminds me of what I have been thinking about Taylor Swift recently. Politically she may not be a Republican but lately, artistically, she is.” Then I scrolled and saw that exact point in the next post 😂

While the trans sports panic was manufactured it’s also true that it’s fueled by sports becoming expensive and therefore high stakes instead of just an affordable way to get your kid exercise and teach them teamwork and discipline. The best thing to do for kids sports is ban travel leagues!

there are good and complicated reasons "quality of life" issues became the domain of the right, but the left's great failure since the '70s has been operating under the assumption that results matter less than righteous intent, despite arguing for a material politics

It would be FAR better for them to do as well as they’re going to do in high school without pushing, and get into a correspondingly rigorous college, than for you to push push push them into an environment they cannot succeed in. College admissions is NOT the most high stakes part of their life!

I agree 1000% with this. I would like to add, as a former undergrad advisor, that to really excel at parenting you should let your high schooler fail. It feels high stakes when they fail because you’re thinking about college admissions but…

The number one reason the administration puts conventionally attractive white women in positions of influence is because they know they can pull the "How dare you criticize this young girl" card and many people, including on the left, will fall for it. Natalie Harp does not deserve your sympathy

There’s actually a secret feature with these glasses - if the person wearing them doesn’t stop recording on request, you can disable the recording function by taking your school issued iPad out of your backpack and, holding it firmly in both hands, slam it as hard as possible across his face

There are four overlapping scandals here: 1. Fundraising spam tactics are hallmarks of elder financial exploitation 2. The Dem establishment is in on it 3. Most of what is raised goes to fundraising consultants 4. Capitulation to legal threats by NYT and The Bulwark on a fully vetted story 🧵👇

In a sick, violent way, they have more faith in the possibility of a new world than a lot of people on the other side. They are willing to reimagine all of it. Many of us cannot imagine getting rid of payday loans and they’re like eff it, let’s see if the Pope’s still got the juice.

When we bought, our realtor sat us down and explained gently that our property taxes would look very high since it was new build and the lot didn’t used to have homeowners exemption. We braced for some gigantic number. She said $3,000. Were from NY so we said oh, per month? She said no…. Per year.

So, if instead of saying “I am observing a conversation between two pundits about the most effective ways to influence the broader American public” you say “I am offended that this person insulted me by saying I need to make videos or else I hate democracy” you aren’t as text based as you thought.

2) audience - Matty and Jamelle aren’t addressing people like me, who do not have or hope to have any influence. I’ll never make videos but that’s fine because nobody cares what I think. They’re only talking to and about journalists or influencers or the substack set.

1) context - I believe the context of Jamelle’s post is a Matty Yglesias post about how Bluesky users should go back to Twitter to engage with their users and try to persuade them, with the implication being that this is how we will persuade the electorate more generally.

This post and the replies to it are such a good example of the different levels and components of social media literacy (and literacy more generally). He is unquestionably correct here and people objected because despite claiming a preference for text-based media they are not social media literate.

Yes it is curious. It’s because they lie. Someone on here mocked me a little when I (gently) explained that edtech’s entire use case in higherEd is to build a higher quality training dataset than the ones AI can scrape from the internet. And to labor bust. I don’t know how else to say it!

I also think it is somehow connected to the complaint I sometimes see from political moderates that “the left is so much MEANER than the right” interpersonally - that sure the republicans are evil but at least they don’t nitpick your politics to death.
