Bold action on air pollution works. Take London’s example. After the ULEZ was introduced, new research shows that children’s lung function improved in Central London, catching up to levels outside London.

Just exempting care workers would be ridiculous. Basically it would be a case of designing a policy to kick out care workers, panicking when you realise how stupid an idea that is, and then kicking out a load of engineers, scientists etc out of sheer stubbornness.

Hostile measures inevitably cause harm, yet every time there is loss of life in the channel all we hear from politicians is how they are going to go further on them. It is the ultimate sunk cost fallacy. Actually ensuring people can seek asylum safely is the only way to properly reduce crossings.

This in turns means resources can be used more effectively to target actual criminals, those who exploit vulnerable individuals. Instead though it is easier to just target the victims of exploitation. People don't choose to be undocumented. This government chooses to vilify them. 5/

So just to clarify, Labour blocks a candidate who stood a good chance of winning because Starmer got scared, pretty much ignored that Reform are fielding a massive racist, and instead attack the Greens on a fairly popular policy idea. Incredibly depressing day. I've spent my entire life being told by British governments how dreadful immigration is. New Labour did it. The Coalition. The Brexiters. Now Starmer. All of them accusing the ones who came before them of failing to clamp down. The same old vacant mean-spirited bollocks.

On social care, there *is* a reasonable argument for limiting/reducing the care visa *if* - as she says - it's linked to a proper pay/workforce strategy. But governments have said that before and failed to deliver. That's why we have a care visa in the first place..

The debate around care visas in the political space boils down to people saying stuff like this - we desperately need people. It's a good soundbite but... A significant surge in care visas were issued since 2020 in response to sector demand and yet the problem of shortage has persisted. Why?

3. The sector IMO is poorly regulated. Bad actors are prominent and exploit people. I've spoken to many many people over the past 12 months, the issue is real & significant. The government is supporting tens of thousands of people who've been displaced/exploited/ripped off into new jobs

So it's not simply "we need these people, give them visas" it's been tried and has been a disaster. The sector needs a massive monetary and skills injection, serious regulation with the support of overseas workers with an immigration system that compliments and supports/protects migrants.

Thousands of people wanting to work in care are stuck in the UK. Lots of jobs that won't fit their visa type. A big additional problem is the need for people to drive - most people on the health and care visa don't have licences and need to learn/pass test que driving test shortage.

The desperate response in 2020 for care workers (COVID etc.) saw the creation of a business model for criminals to exploit tens of thousands of people into paying for visas to come to the UK. It also saw the creation of conditions for modern slavery / exploitation. The answer is not more visas.

The Telegraph has now published not one but *three* separate corrections of its repeated false claims about "illegal immigrants in London". The latest one is of Lord Frost's bizarre and ignorant rant here: archive.ph/HBZLF
February 5, 2025

In an article “We have no clue how many people live in Britain - and Starmer doesn’t care” (Jan,23) it was stated that one in 12 people in London is an illegal migrant. The figure is up to one in 13 in the Thames Water London Water Resource Zone , which does not cover the whole of London. We are happy to correct the record.

February 4, 2025

In an article “Enough learnt helplessness. Here’s how Britain ends illegal immigration” (Jan, 24) it was stated that one in 12 people in London is an illegal migrant. The figure is up to one in 13 in the Thames Water London Water Resource Zone, which does not cover the whole of London. We are happy to correct the record.

January 31, 2025

In an online article “Up to one in 12 in London is an illegal migrant” (Jan, 22), the figure of 7,044,667 was the estimated population of the Thames Water London Water Resource Zone, excluding irregular migrants, not geographical London which is about 9 million. “Up to 1 in 12 illegal migrants” was incorrect and ought to have been “up to 1 in 13”, based on the study’s upper figure for irregular migrants, which includes children born in the UK with irregular status and, it is understood, those with indefinite leave to remain. We are happy to correct the record.
