Poem by Isha Camara

Kanifing, Gambia

Grandfather’s compound, 2009

The first time I saw a chicken killed, I did not care to hold grief

in me like I would were it a baby or a dog. That young, I didn’t know grief.

I was fascinated. The one who orchestrated the murder was a grandmother,

sharp, elbows welded like a blade. She knew not to scatter blood-grief,

but instead made a song out of clucking. I liked that. But death didn’t stop.

On white floors came the plucking. Do it– I’m prompted to join, feel grief

grin over me. I marvel at the public undressing of the almost dead. The chicken

is pink, chatty. It fashes its slit neckbone at me in flirt, performing grief

like a last ditch effort to be released. I cluck i’m sorry. My collarbone rattles too.

I remember the man that wrangled me into his barn. I pick the fence metal griefed

inside of me. I blink. Now I bring the poultry to boiling water. Till the feathers

I couldn’t pluck with my hands fall. I am passed another chicken before my grief

can settle. This one is feisty, breaks from my arms. I follow like a man behind it.

During its useless scramble, Isha thought: what dance would I perform in grief?

C.D. Wright, “Tours”

A girl on the stairs listens to her father
Beat up her mother.
Doors bang.
She comes down in her nightgown.

The piano stands there in the dark
Like a boy with an orchid.

She plays what she can
Then she turns the lamp on.

Her mother's music is spread out
On the floor like brochures.

She hears her father
Running through the leaves.

The last black key
She presses stays down, makes no sound
Someone putting their tongue where their tooth had been.

New poem in the inaugural issue of Waltz and honored to share space with so many incredible poets. waltzjournal.com/issue-one/
Screenshot of my poem on the Waltz website. The poem reads:

Paradise
In fact, an unsettled heaven is what I had prepared for. In all directions the songs of specters, a harp floating midair.
There is one difference between a hymn and a song and it's in its power to parch its listener. I sometimes wonder if angels too need water for how long they're asked to hold their notes. I imagine them singing, shining, rows of plastic bottles lined at their sandaled feet.
Heaven is the planet we destroy after this one.
In the beginning, they too called this place magic.

I call it joy

this being unnoticed. Sitting like this next to the stone lamb outside the cathedral.
My lost soul, which prefers the stone lamb to the living God. Prefers these deep shadows
to the summer day. The way he took me all those years ago, shattered me so that fifty-seven years later, I might sit
next to the smoothness of this stone lamb,
know the stone joy of being unnoticed.
People go in the cathedral all day long,
visiting their God on their knees. That man who betrayed me when I was a boy, first held me up to a tree so I would know what smell lemon blossoms have.

HOW WE DISAPPEAR

I am in the store touching things.

Linen napkins, a blue bowl.

The world is on fire and I am choosing between two kinds of soap.

Everyone here is doing this, filling carts with small comforts while somewhere a child
goes to bed hungry, while the earth heats,
while men make decisions about who gets to live.

I know what this is, this careful arranging
while everything collapses.
This is how we survive.

And also how we disappear.

The repetition of ‘here’, and even the missing word in the title, in Collette Bryce's poem speaks of absence. The enjambment & line endings fill the poem with thoughtful hesitation. I love the unusual similes too – ‘like discs in a jukebox’ #poetry #poemoftheday #NationalLonelinessWeek

A poem and drawing, both recent. I didn't do them to go together, but they fit well.
A poem, titled "Water Clock" with a black and white drawing. The text of the poem reads:

Water Clock

Time is always
slipping though our fingers
or swirling past our ankles,
wearing our edges smooth
and dissolving
things we know
into
things we don’t.
Time is water.
We are all awash.

And though we try
to soak ourselves within it
like a sponge,
holding tight and full
to every moment that we have,
eventually
the world will
wring the minutes out of us,
drop by drop,
until we are bone dry
and all our time has spilled
into the dirt
and
is gone.

But that is as it should be.
Time is never ours to keep;
we only get to swim through it
for as long as we can hold our breath.

-- John Wyatt Greenlee"

The drawing is black and white, and made of abstract shapes and lines. It might show the a slender figure with long hair, standing on a rock in the middle of a body of water, reaching out and up with her left hand.

danez smith SAY IT WITH YOUR WHOLE BLACK MOUTH
say it with your whole black mouth

say it with your whole black mouth: i am innocent & if you are not innocent, say this: i am worthy
of forgiveness, of breath after breath. i tell you this: i let blue eyes dress me in guilt
walked around stores convinced the very skin of my palm was stolen. what good has it brought?
days filled flinching thinking the sirens were reaching for me. & when the sirens were mine
did i not make peace with God? so many white people are alive
because we know how to control ourselves. how many times have we died on a whim
wielded like gallows in their sun-shy hands? here, standing in my own body, i say: next time
they murder us for the crime of their imaginations i don't know what i'll do.
i did not come to preach of peace for that's not the hunted's duty.

i came here to say what i can't say without my name being added to a list
what my mother fears i will say what she wishes to say herselfi came here to say
i can't bring myself to write it down
sometimes i dream of pulling an apology from a pig's collared neck & wake up crackin' up
if i dream of setting fire to cul-de-sacs i wake chained to the bed
i don't like thinking about doing to white folks what white folks done to us
when i do
can't say
i don't dance
o my people
how long will we
reach for God
instead of something
sharper?
