Investing in avoiding and restoring degraded land makes sound economic sense, as the benefits generally far exceed the costs.   And beyond the economic benefits, avoiding and reversing soil degradation also supports livelihoods, employment, gender equality and local investments in education.

The current size of the Antarctic ozone hole is close to the record observed in 2015. Our forecasts suggest that it may set a new record in the coming days. The good news is that, despite its large size, the 2026 ozone hole is much shallower than the one eleven years ago. More ⬇️ @ecmwf.int

NEW from me: China's CO2 emissions fell by 1% in the second quarter of 2026, as oil consumption plummeted amid the Strait of Hormuz crisis, with EVs and public transport among the key factors. Oil consumption fell by 9% overall and by 16% for transport. 🧵

L’été 2026 est, de loin, le + chaud jamais observé en France, devançant 2003 de 0,8°C. Seulement 5 jours sous les normales, contre 86 au-dessus. Il laisse derrière lui une agriculture en lambeaux et des écosystèmes à l’agonie. 1/10

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

EU solar generation reached RECORD levels in June & July, providing 25% of generation each month ☀️ Solar output was especially high during the heatwaves, helping the grid meet extra power demand. Other sources like nuclear, hydro & gas struggled with the heat. ember-energy.org/lat...
