Can't entirely put the blame/credit on external forces. The electorate has been progressively abandoned by Lib/Lab. Years of frustration in the build-up, but no "option" seemed ready to hand. Then a segment of the elites judged the timing was right and bang, suddenly it's asshats ascendent.

Sideways thought, but this entire rights question would totally shift if the financial angle were removed... In many respects, it's totally amazing to have a global hive mind ingesting and re-presenting the work of us all. Except for how sh#@t the techbros have implemented it....

Scientists now estimate this El Niño could cause 450,000 additional deaths in just six months. We're no longer debating whether climate change will become dangerous. We're debating how many people we're willing to let die before changing an economic system that demands endless growth.

No need to read, based on title. The issue never seems to be: at what level of material consumption, energy use, and waste? Cause that would invite a whole lot of uncomfortable questions that we've decided are too hard for us hyper-cooperative beings to even discuss. Leave it to the invisible hand

I keep hearing this idea that "I don't like AI, but maybe it can solve climate change" and I just... what? Surely there is nothing about "solving" climate change that needs more computing power or ideas. It's purely about the interaction of power structures and social realities. Can we not?

Bathla’s collapse is why Australia needs a public developer - not private developers profiteering off a housing crisis. Bathla owes over $3.4 billion to creditors, subcontractors & suppliers, with 14,000 homes in the pipeline. Hundreds of jobs lost. People’s entire savings are on the line.

The real low point in Kevin Gallagher's speech earlier this week was when he claimed the gas industry receives no government subsidies. Between direct grants - $15m - and free credits - $85m - Santos has received $100m worth of federal subsidies for its Moomba CCS project. I guess he forgot those.

So a government can break promises & lie, over a decade, violate one of the main requirements of offsets, additionality, & then practice extortion to deliver a national park, that the public will still end up paying most of the costs for, & it’s all sweet & the Greens are the real troublemakers. 😎

Perhaps it's time to critically examine the values we're supposed to be cohering around... Perhaps just possibly, it's the racist, capitalist, colonialist core of "Australia" (tm) that is no longer compelling enough to justify coherence? Maybe better values would be stickier??
