I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

#ShowMeYourKnits this week is about what’s on our needles. I just visited my mom and brought each of us a skein of handspun by @paisleydefender.bsky.social to play with. We’re following the vortex recipe from the shawl book by @kateatherley.bsky.social and @indigodragonfly.bsky.social + stripes!
Two striped shawls in progress. Both use handspun in earthy colours. A lighter-weight brown and blue yarn is paired with blue Tiki wool. A thicker brown and mauve handspun is paired with dark purple Canadian wool dyed by Indigodragonfly. The shawls have the same shape but are different sizes. Cakes of yarn in the foreground show off the subtle handspun.

The DHSI workshop itself, on CollectionBuilder, is amazing. At the end of this week I’m going to have a stable replacement for a legacy project with >6500 index entries. This index was someone’s dedicated project for many years. The impending loss of it has filled me with dread since 2019.

This is it. I’m here in Montreal for DHSI. It was particularly unmooring as a keynote attached to weeklong workshops on DH skills. As a data librarian, I’m not at lots of explicitly DH events. So some of his bigger existential questions about DH could have steered my thinking. Until the q&a.

I gasped when you asked your question. My attention had wandered. And I knew you were right. The scholarly conversation just wasn’t there. No citations. No moments of connection in the q&a. Nothing to read later, even if the full text is available.

I was put off when he mentioned “stochastic parrots” without citing @emilymbender.bsky.social - and then I realized that he wasn’t mentioning any other works. Just not his style to cite other scholars? Were there even references at the end? I don’t remember.

The vibe is very "just some ideas for discussion" to make everyone accept something less terrible from the list of bad ideas. But the discussion is demoralizing. I have so much gratitude for the unions, especially student unions, responding to the government in a respectful tone.
