Commission finds widespread chronic abuse in Canadian high-performance sport and their recommendation is for more money to Canadian high-performance sport. We need to somehow move past the fallacy that high-performance sport is an inherent and necessary good. apple.news/Am_wYnVcJSke...
While the commission foresees taking up to five years to implement some of its changes, it calls on the federal government to immediately increase the amount of money it gives to national sport organizations, which have not seen core funding raised since 2005, to make up for the effects of inflation.
Several organizations, including the Canadian Olympic Committee, have been trying for years to sound the alarm about the urgent need to make up for funding shortfalls in high-performance sport. Some observers blamed underfunding after Team Canada brought home fewer medals than expected at the Winter Olympics last month.
But Ms. Maisonneuve said lack of money has more damaging consequences.
“Chronic underfunding makes sports less safe,” she said on Tuesday. “Organizations are being asked to do much more, like governance, safe sport, equity, compliance, with fewer resources. And the fear of losing funding feeds directly into the culture of silence.”

“Given the ongoing genocide in Gaza…we call on Sport Canada and Tennis Canada to forbid Canadian athletes to compete against Israeli athletes at the Davis Cup and all other international events.” - 413 🇨🇦 academics, athletes + sports journalists, inc 3 former UN special rapporteurs + an Olympic 🥈ist
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (FREDERICTON, August 18th, 2025) A group of 413 Canadian and Canadian-based scholars, athletes, sports journalists, and sports officials have signed a public letter calling on Tennis Canada to cancel the Davis Cup tournament with Israel this September in Halifax. Signatories include three United Nations Special Rapporteurs, four-time Olympian distance runner Mohammed Ahmed, two members of the Palestinian women’s soccer team who compete for York University, a former Canadian Olympic beach volleyball coach, sports journalists Shireen Ahmed and Ian Kennedy, public intellectuals and activists Naomi Klein and Avi Lewis and some of Canada’s most distinguished and internationally-recognized scholars. The letter is signed by prominent individuals from 46 different academic institutions in Canada, as well as by Canadians at prominent global institutions. One hundred and six of the signatories are based in Atlantic Canada, where the event is slated to occur. The call to cancel the Davis Cup event comes amidst rising condemnation of Israeli conduct in Gaza and the West Bank, which leading legal scholars, activists and human rights groups have described as a genocide. Given the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the letter says that allowing the competition to go ahead is “unconscionable” and calls on the Canadian government to prevent Canadian athletes from competing against Israeli athletes in all international sporting competitions. Despite Tennis Canada’s claims that the event isn’t political and is just about playing tennis, the letter states in part that Canada should follow the lead of other nations who “refuse to legitimize Israel’s crimes” by withdrawing from international sporting competition. “This includes Jordanian tennis player Abdellah Shelbayh, who recently withdrew from a tennis competition in Greece after being slated to play an Israeli athlete,” the letter says. The letter points to the use of sporting sanctions in South Africa as a meaningful …

This is actually incredible. Tennis Canada is willing to endorse genocide by hosting Israel in Davis Cup tennis for the low low low price of $2.2 million. That's the projected economic benefit. Not including the cost of policing protesters, which will of course be deducted from that.

If Canada goes through with hosting Israel in a Davis Cup tennis match in September, it is tantamount to endorsing the genocide of Palestinians—at the very moment it claims it will acknowledge a Palestinian state. We argue for @mondoweiss.net that the only moral choice is to cancel.

Abstract
The war experience (WE) presents a highly troublesome period for sport performers, with severe effects on their lives and career trajectories. In this article, we initially conceptualize the WE through the scheme of change for sport psychology practice (Samuel & Tenenbaum, 2011a). The WE is considered a longitudinal, multifaceted, unpredicted, noncontrolled, negative change-event, developed over four distinct stages with specific demands and responses: (a) a pre-war stage, (b) War stage-A accompanied by instability and confusion, (c) War stage-B characterized by active coping or regression, and (d) War stage-C; return to sport activity, modification of activity, or retirement. The development of this change process in sport performers’ careers is discussed within the context of the 2023 Israel-Hamas war. Thereafter, we discuss applied practice efforts to support sport performers through the WE. The conclusions offer future avenues for researchers and practitioners when attempting to evaluate and cope with this unique change-event.The human toll of the conflict is immense, with tragic loss of life and countless individuals facing trauma. Emotional responses vary from fear and anxiety to anger and survivor's guilt. The impact extends beyond immediate physical danger to include profound psychological distress.
The turmoil has also affected various aspects of Israeli society, including sports. Leagues have been suspended, training disrupted, and travel restrictions imposed, akin to experiences during other conflicts such as the Russo-Ukrainian war (Pavlova et al., 2023). Uncertainty looms over the resumption of sporting activities, contingent upon security considerations (Buckingham, 2023). International participation has been hindered by flight cancellations and safety concerns, leading to the departure of foreign personnel (Buckingham, 2023; Felberg, 2023).
Reflecting on the impact of the conflict on sports’ performers is crucial for effective response and support. While some athletes may benefit from the hiatus to recover or improve skills, others face setbacks in their careers. The unique circumstances require a nuanced approach, considering individual contexts and needs (Henriksen et al., 2020; Schinke et al., 2020a).
As researchers and practitioners in the sports domain, we acknowledge the challenge of addressing these issues amidst ongoing conflict. Nonetheless, we aim to provide valuable insights and recommendations to navigate this unprecedented situation, drawing parallels to research conducted during other crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g., di Fronso et al., 2022; Henriksen et al., 2020; Pillay et al., 2020). Amidst uncertainty, we endeavor to contribute meaningfully to understanding and mitigating the impact of the current conflict on sports and athletes.

In a move that *should* be precedent-setting for other scholarly organizations, the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport (NASSS) announces that this year’s conference will be held concurrently at sites in the US and Canada and online due to the dangerous US political climate.
1. We have decided not to host a single-site in-person conference in Seattle this year. Instead, we will have two in-person sites and a robust online participation option. While we are still working out the details, we will have an in-person conference site in Seattle, another in-person conference site in Vancouver, B.C., and significantly more opportunities for online participation than in years past, as well as opportunities for sessions that virtually bring together folx in the two in-person locations. We emphasize that we want your own safety and comfort to be the primary consideration as you decide whether and how to participate in this year’s conference. Wherever you live and whatever your citizenship status and/or subject position, we encourage you to carefully consider which of the three participation options (if any) you decide to take up. It is entirely up to you whether you feel safe or willing to cross a border or to travel at all. To help us with our organizational efforts, we will be sending out a very short survey in the coming days. It is imperative that we hear from as many NASSSers as possible both in terms of organizational efforts and to minimize our financial liabilities.
