Mayor Mamdani announces a ban on generative AI in schools through 8th grade: AI is not going to replace student-teacher interaction in NYC public schools. We have also heard the importance of protecting childhood—allowing students the opportunity to ask questions, to engage, to fail, to learn.

Suzanne graduated with a PhD in English Literature in 2021 with a thesis about the role of the internet in the 21stc digital literary sphere supervised by Anouk Lang (@aelang.bsky.social). While working @iashedinburgh.bsky.social, she developed her thesis into a full-length monograph.

reading computer science journals from the 1950s this morning, which I recommend as a soothing antidote to AI hype, I found what might be the earliest published instance of "doge" in a computing context (1959)

Something I don't understand is: why can't LLMs write novel-length fiction yet? They've got the context length for it. And new models seem capable of the multi-hop reasoning required for plot. So why hasn't anyone demoed a model that can write long interesting stories? I do have a theory ... +
