Recently pulled together an emergency preparedness pod with people who live near me because of the many (worsening) crises that we are in or are heading our way. Can't stress enough for others to do this asap. Even just having a couple of conversations about it is better than nothing and will help.

Talk now about what you will do if there is a bad power outage, esp one that might last a while. How will you meet up and communicate if the cell towers go down or there is no way to access the internet? How will you get water? Share resources together? Where will you shelter?

I know it may seem daunting to approach your neighbors, especially if you don't know them at all, (hell, it may be daunting to approach your friends), but i have found that most people do not have a plan and are grateful for someone else initiating it.

Are you neurodivergent, a parent of someone ND, or an educator with ND students? Would you like to help create ND-friendly educational settings? Do you have ideas for improving ND educational experiences? Yes? Then please take Stanford's #neurodiversity survey: redcap.stanford.edu/surveys/?s=D...
Image: Flyer with a pale yellow background and yellow blobs in three corners.

In the upper right corner is the Stanford Medicine logo next to small text reading, "Stanford Center for Neurodiversity and Human Potential"

The title is in all-caps and reads, "Developing community and expert consensus on neurodiversity-informed education"

Next, text reads,
"• Are you a neurodivergent individual, a parent of someone who is neurodivergent, or an educator who works with this community?
"• Would you like to contribute to creating neurodiversity-friendly educational settings?
"• Do you have ideas for improving educational experiences for neurodivergent students?

"Participate in an online survey on neurodiversity! We are inviting neurodivergent individuals (age 13+), parents/guardians of neurodivergent individuals, and educators of neurodivergent students who currently reside in the US, UK, Canada, EU countries, Taiwan, or Hong Kong. Total participation time is less than 1 hour."

"Principal Investigator: Lawrence Fung MD, PhD
Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University"

Next, a brown button reads, "LEARN MORE"

Text at the bottom reads, "Email us at stanfordneurodiversityproject@stanford.edu or scan the QR code to check out!"

The QR code leads to the URL https://redcap.stanford.edu/surveys/?s=DKW8APRJHM3CTTND

In the lower right corner is an illustration of an adult showing a drawing to three seated children, two of whom are raising their hands.

Below the drawing, small text reads, "For complaints, concerns, or participant's rights, contact 1-866-680-2906."

Today, Aug 8, is #SevereMEDay. Today we discuss severe-presenting #MECFS and remember people with severe ME. #MECFS is an infection-associated chronic illness, which means it is often, but not always, kicked off by an infection. ~Half of #LongCOVID cases at 6 mo meet the dx criteria for ME/CFS. 🧵
Two diagrams from the Mayo Clinic Proceedings article I co-authored. On the left, a diagram of a woman's body, including symptoms of fatigue, muscle aches, PEM, cognitive dysfunction, unrefreshing sleep, orthostatic intolerance, temp. dysregulation, urinary frequency, myalgia, sensory sensitivity/reactivity, swollen lymph nodes & other flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, palpitations/chest pain, appetite changes and diarrhea/constipation. On the right, a wheel diagram of symptoms that may flare in post-exertional malaise, the pathology that occurs w/overexertion in which many symptoms flare and new symptoms may appear. It notes that PEM is not deconditioning, not being more tired than usual after activity, not second-day muscle soreness and symptoms are not necessarily relieved by sleep. It includes all the symptoms mentioned in the first diagram but has some sections on what it's like in the patient's own words.

This thread is SO resonant to me right now. Over the past couple of years as I've explored my own neurodivergence & adjusted my approach to living & socialising, how it LOOKS from the outside is that I've made my life smaller - when I've actually just given myself permission to make it more livable.

Functioning labels are pathologising, as Kieran Rose explains here: theautisticadvocate.com/autism-its-l...
The linear concept was simpler, easier to operationalise in research, easier for professionals and the public to understand, and easier for systems that wanted to categorise Autistic people into neat groups, so it’s the one that stuck. So, once that linear spectrum took hold, functioning labels followed.

“High Functioning” and “Low functioning” became everyday shorthand.

‘High Functioning’ meant independent, speaking, able to perform in ways that reassured non-Autistic people.

‘Low Functioning’ meant dependent, non-speaking, requiring visible support. Both labels erased reality: The so-called ‘high functioning’ dismissed when they struggled, their support needs ignored. The so-called ‘low functioning; denied agency, meaningful communication, their abilities and potential written off.

Functioning labels flatten complexity, stripping Autistic people of the right to be understood as whole, dynamic human beings. The logic behind these labels is rooted in capitalism and eugenics. High functioning is code for productive, employable, useful to the economy. Low functioning is code for burden and cost. Human worth is measured in relation to how well someone fits into systems of labour and independence, whether they can be deemed as ‘contributors’ to society, or a drain on it. So the labels aren’t really scientific descriptors at all but instead are moral judgements. The impact of these labels is not evenly distributed.

Racialised children are more likely to be labelled “severe” or “profound,” their strengths overlooked, and their behaviours read through the lens of prejudice. Autistic women and girls are more likely to be told they are “mild,” their struggles minimised, their masking mistaken for coping. Poor families are often pathologised as chaotic or neglectful, with their children described in deficit terms that justify surveillance. These labels aren’t ever applied in a vacuum instead, they are shaped by, and in turn contribute to, the shaping of existing inequalities of race, gender, and class.

The second, though, is that able-bodied people often think of someone being "wheelchair bound." For most who use them, the wheelchair is not the issue. The frailty of the body is an issue - the wheelchair is a solution. The disability is what binds you, but the wheelchair provides *freedom.*

After taking @jerthorp.bsky.social fantastic birding and data viz class last year, I’ve been thinking about different ways of collecting and displaying my personal birding observations. One of things I’ve decided to do this year is focusing on tracking a few specific birds daily.
Hand drawn data visualization on graph paper. January is printed at the top followed by a list of birds. Under each bird name is a simple bar graph of 31 squares (representing the days of the month). At the bottom of the page are the numbers 1-31.

The charts are filled in as follows:

Downey Woodpecker (days 2, 5-10)
Hairy Woodpecker (day 4)
Red-Bellied Woodpecker (days 2, 5-7, 10)
Cooper’s Hawk (days 4, 7, 10)
