All these tech guys going 'look, you don't need musicians anymore! We can just generate whatever music you want!' and it's the fucking POPE who has to explain to them that art occupies a space not replaceable by the products of machines.

The sounds that were caught in here...
A three storey brick building with two rows of four windows. The ground floor has three windows in line with the upper floors and a door in the bottom left corner.

All the windows have white painted stones above them. The ground floor brick work is painted black.

To the side of the door are two heritage plaques.

A sign running along the top of the black section reads 'STRAWBERRY STUDIOS STOCKPORT'. The A in Strawberry has been replaced with a ... strawberry. Two round metal heritage plaques mounted on the wall of the former Strawberry Studios, Stockport.

The top one relates the history of the group 10cc who recorded in the building.

The lower one reads:
'STOCKPORT HERITAGE TRUST

STRAWBERRY RECORDING STUDIOS 1967 to 1993

Home to the band 10 cc and used by many to create memorable music, including Joy Division, Paul McCartney, Martin Hannett, Neil Sedaka, The Stone Roses, The Smiths and The Syd Lawrence Orchestra

Septembers reading included... Always pleasant to escape into Edward Thomas's Fenlands. Otherwise, a mixed bag...
A pile of books, hardbacks and paperbacks, spines to view, with a background of plants (sage, and an apple tree).

I'm half-British and half-Thai. A random right-winger verbally racially abused me in the street for no reason at all. That same man was in my A&E ward a couple of days later due to a cardiac arrest. I was the doctor who saved him. There's a moral in that story somewhere.

A view of a park.

A large grassy area is bounded by trees on the far side, with a tree closer on the left side. A generally clear light blue/grey sky above has a touch of cloud on the right.

Across the grass, there is a band of white mist.

Shhhh Sneak preview of @beckbook.com's exegesis on Philip K. Dick Don't tell my editor 🤫 beckbook.com
THE LAST TEMPTATION oF BECK

Dick and Hubbard--two more different science fictior writers Can
scarcely be imagined. And yet, both claimed to have received visions, to
have been granted prophecy.

What do you do if God speaks to you? What do you do once you've
glimpsed the ultimate Truth?

Dick died in 1982, never having come to a conclusion about what had
happened to him. He left a record of what hed experienced, but left it to
his readers to form their own opinions. His work remains in print: no
church has declared it to be scripture.

That said: Dick did, in fact, invent a religion. It's in his novel Do An-
droids Dream of Electric Sheep? (later the loose inspiration for the film
Blade Runner). In the world of the novel, a new faith emerges after a
nuclear apocalypse. Its adherents call it Mercerism

Mercerism's practices revolve around a machine-the "empathy box"--
that one has to interface with by holding two handles. It bears an uncanny
resemblance to an E-meter. But this fictional device doesn't measure your
emotions: it stokes them

When you grasp the handles of the empathy box, you suddenly feel as
though you are a man named Wilbur Mercer, who is climbing up a
treacherous hill, only to be pelted with rocks by mysterious and evil fig
ures in your periphery. People use the machine to experience Mercer's
physical and emotional pain-as well as the emotions of all the other
worshippers using an empathy box at that moment.

In real life, this is what art does. It's what art is for. Art, at its best.
makes other people real to you. It gives you a glimpse into something
outside yourself, but just as real as you are, It's proof that we're not sur-
rounded by automatons

New second hand record shop has opened in Kendal (Revolving Eye, in the New Shambles)... ...rude not to have a mooch, at least, and came out with these. Lost my Levitation cd a while back but, bizarrely, the sticker on the back of this one looks really familiar...
A record and four compact disc cases displayed on a bench.

At the back is a 10" Bark Psychosis single ('A Street Scene'), an image of coloured blurred lights in a dark environment viewed through a wooden window frame. The art is credited to David McKean.

Leaning along the bottom of this are two cd cases; on the left, a bizarre collage that is Levitations first proper album, 'Need for Not' and next to it, a grey and white drawing of a skull that is the cover of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's 'I See a Darkness'.

Lying flat are two more cd cases: on the left is a painting of emblems on a beige background being the cover of David Sylvian's 'Gone to Earth's and next to it, an abstract multi-coloured design for David Toop's compilation, 'Ocean of Sound'. Coincidentally, both of these were designed by Russell Mills.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Hercule Poirot dressed all in black speaks to Captain Hastings in a grand hallway “Please ask the suspects to gather in the library, Hastings: I wish to reveal that our births are random, our lives meaningless, and our deaths absurd.”

Caption “Having investigated so many awful murders over the years, it was perhaps unsurprising that Hercule Poirot turned to Existentialism”

p.s. Poirot had presumably been reading a lot of Sartre recently…

"It is meaningless that we live and it is meaningless that we die," Jean-Paul Sartre, Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant)

“Every existing thing is born without reason, prolongs itself out of weakness, and dies by chance.” Jean-Paul Sartre, Nausea (La Nausée)
