My article published today examines how lawfare and criminal selectivity reinforces an authoritarian‑populist imagination in Turkey. Judiciary’s move against CHP (main opposition) happening on the same day offers a vivid reminder of how that imagination operates in practice.

Yeah, I think this was the miscalculation. They didn’t learn after 2019 that even non-CHPs are outraged by power grabs (except against HDP/DEM). And the timing worked internationally, but it also provided a focal point for millions. Older people who might not protest but would show up to vote.

It seems like they are going with the jail decision against Imamoglu. If the gov. holds early elections and the opposition remains undivided around Imamoglu’s place holder, this tactic can backfire. That is a big “if” but not impossible given the underdog appreciation in Turkey.
