I think Reczek is right: estrangement is happening more now because the attitudes of children have changed. That doesn't mean children are the problem, even though that's what the story says.
Changing expectations of family relationships
"There is a culture clash happening right now between the meaning and dynamics of family," says Rin Reczek, a sociologist at Ohio State University and author of
"Families We Lose: A New Explanation for Family Estrangement®"
The parents of adult children grew up in a culture of "compulsory kinship," she says.
Families were supposed to be forever. Even when there were problems, adult children were expected to stay.
This idea is now increasingly challenged by a notion Reczek calls "democratized kinship"— the idea that maintaining family ties depends on their quality. Reczek's research found that people rely on accountability and growth, intentional connection, mutual respect and emotional safety to remain in a relationship.
"Think about how people started to think differently about marriage in the mid-20th century, that you could get out of it," Reczek says. "That is getting pushed out into other family relationships now."

Guillaume Johnson and I wrote about apologies in racialized organizations being decoupled from actual anti-racist actions. journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...
Abstract
How do organizations reproduce racism while apologizing for it? We address this question using a racialized decoupling perspective, examining how organizational apologia discursively disconnects formal commitments to race neutrality from actual anti-racist actions. Analyzing a data set of apology statements issued in the United States, we show that beneath recurring apologetic narratives that acknowledge offense, deny intent, and signal diversity lie three key dynamics that (1) center racialized emotions, (2) preserve white ignorance, and (3) promote abstract liberalism. Through these dynamics, organizations, respectively, hierarchize reactions, deflect accountability, and project virtue—all in ways that distance themselves from the need for change. These apologies ultimately serve to neutralize the momentum of racial critique, functioning as myth and ceremony that allow organizations to appear good and non-racist while maintaining existing racial structures. We conclude by suggesting ways forward.
