I argue that, in both cases, anti-gender discourse redirects the affect generated by real, prevalent, impunity-enabled violence onto symbolic targets — feminist and LGBTQ+ communities — …

What emerges is a shared underlying mechanism despite very different structures: a top-down, state-orchestrated criminal selectivity in Turkey, and a diffuse complicity between shadow powers and the state in Mexico.

For this, I use family resemblance (Wittgenstein) and cultural translation (Spivak) to put Turkey and Mexico in relation to one another, translating a concept I developed for the Turkish case — masculinist entrenchment — into the Mexican context.

I deploy a relational Global South perspective that resists reading Turkey and Mexico through a hegemonic Northern perspective or reducing them to the same restrictive Global South template, but reads them alongside one another.

Bu makale Türkiye’deki güncel siyasi gelişmeleri takip ederek, mevcut iktidarın yargı silahı ve kriminal seçicilik üzerinden otoriter‑popülist tahayyülünü nasıl pekiştirdiğini tartışıyor. CHP’ye yönelik son yargı müdahalesi bu tahayyülün nasıl çalıştığına dair çarpıcı bir örnek oldu.

I argue that contemporary Turkey’s political trajectory is shaped by mutually reinforcing mechanisms of lawfare and criminal selectivity, which together consolidate a gendered sense of power for authoritarian populist imagination despite declining popular support for the regime.

My article published today examines how lawfare and criminal selectivity reinforces an authoritarian‑populist imagination in Turkey. Judiciary’s move against CHP (main opposition) happening on the same day offers a vivid reminder of how that imagination operates in practice.
