As climate activism more frequentlyinvolves direct challenges to the modernproperty regime, it triggers responsesfrom the state that defend this regime. This defense combines repression – byway of policing, surveillance, imprisonment etc.- with willfulmanipulation and ideological obfuscationregarding the relevant categories, including the very category of civildisobedience and the potential meaningsof ‘radical’ protest. Against thisbackground, my contribution will advancethree claims: 1) In response to neoauthoritarian tendencies to repress anddelegitimize protest – especially protestframed as ‘radical’–, it is crucial, for boththeoretical and political reasons, tounderstand what civil disobedienceentails and why it is called civil, even ifits ends and/or means may appear asradical. 2) Civil disobedience, properlyunderstood, can entail acts usuallyconsidered to be violent (and thus ‘tooradical’), namely the destruction, deactivation, or damaging of property(especially climate disruptive machinery, infrastructure and equipment). 3) In theface of climate catastrophe, there areadditional strong reasons – beyondestablished, more general radicaldemocratic arguments – to stretch thelimits of the civil beyond its narrowliberal and conventionalist interpretation. In this interactive session (90 min), Dr. Celikates will address these questions, followed by moderated discussionbringing together philosophical, socialpsychological and activist perspectives.

📢Fresh article out: Through interviews and participatory truth-witnessing*, Judit, Laurent, and I delved into (post)migrant Bakurê Kurds' perspectives on intragroup relations rooted in understandings of power in the context of extended Turkish racialized colonial violence in Belgium
“This must really come from within”: Kurdish
diasporic narratives of solidarity as resistance and
existence in Belgium

https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.70090

canan coşkan | Laurent Licata | Judit Kende
Abstract
Migrant members of racially marginalized groups pursue
their political struggle in places outside their land of origin.
How would they resist racialized collective violence in
the diaspora by engaging in solidarity as they acculturate
to a new societal order? Combining traditional social
psychological approaches of intragroup relationships with
anticolonial and antiracist combative praxis, the current
research examined (post)migrant Kurds' narratives of
solidarity as resistance as they shared their experiences
of Turkish racialized colonial violence in Belgium. We
conducted a mixed methods study combining in-depth
interviews with researcher participatory truth-witnessing.
We interviewed 24 Kurds (2 sexual and gender minorities,
10 cisheterosexual women, 12 cisheterosexual men) about
their intragroup relations and Kurdish resistance against
collective violence. Reflexive thematic analysis centring
around intragroup solidarity showed that participants
understood and practiced solidarity as resistance and
existence in several ways. In the diaspora, they navigated
resistance against Turkish collective violence, transnational
repression and the structural challenges of migrational
acculturation through diverse, multi-sited, multi-layered
and liminal intragroup solidarity despite some intragroup
exclusions, with a desire for intragroup unity. Participatory
truth-witnessing revealed that political organization and
critical consciousness are central to intragroup solidarity
beyond ethnocultural cohesion.

Such a timely* publication about the psychological tolls of LGBTIAQ+ discrimination and resilience as buffer in Turkey, specifically with participants from Bursa based on a activist-researcher co-production research with mixed-methods! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
“I Am Very Happy That We Are Such Beautiful People”: Lived Experiences, Perceived Discrimination, and Mental Health in an LGBTIQ+ Community in Turkey

Buket Kara, Defne Güzel, Semih Özkarakaş, Doğa Eroğlu-Şah, Umut Şah

Co-produced by LGBTIQ+ activists and academic researchers, this study gave voice to an understudied LGBTIQ+ community in Turkey to narrate their lived experiences and examined their exposure to discrimination in various areas of their lives in relation to their mental health. The study utilized a mixed-method design, where 61 individuals who identified as LGBTIQ+, aged 18–47, responded to an online survey. The quantitative tools included questionnaires assessing mental well-being, psychological symptoms, resilience, and perceived discrimination. Qualitatively, participants responded to open-ended questions regarding their lived experiences, such as coming out, access to healthcare, and self-care practices. Participants were frequently exposed to various forms of discrimination, which were associated with lower mental well-being and higher psychological symptoms. However, personal resilience factors lowered or diminished the negative role of discrimination on mental health. Identity-based lived experiences and practices further provided an in-depth picture of life of LGBTIQ+ individuals in this community and how they overcome adversity.
