The irony of reactionary critiques of alleged out-of-touch elitistism of higher education is its own out-of-touch elitism, reducing higher education to a few elite schools and ignoring (being ignorant of) the vast majority of schools that educate the vast majority of students.

Not an Americanist here asking maybe a question with an obvious answer: what is the rate of congressional non-confirmation for administration’s nominees when there is a unified government? I see these long sessions in which the nominee gives bs answers and then they are confirmed anyway.

I was waiting for this take. Now someone needs to write a counterpoint suggesting this was the biggest victory of liberal democracy. Look, for anyone other than those living under that kind of authoritarian pressure, it might be easy to see the nuance. But for them this is hope.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: IR 101 Under Stress: Theory and Practice at Odds. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.
This roundtable was co-organized by the European International Studies Association (EISA) and the International Studies Association (ISA). International Relations has long offered conceptual maps for making sense of global politics. Today, many of the discipline’s core concepts are being actively stress-tested by contemporary political practice. This roundtable asks what IR’s classical paradigms still offer to contemporary decision-makers. At the same time, IR scholars face their own challenge: how to remain intellectually relevant without overstating the discipline’s capacity to predict...

This is similar to what we find in our recent study on which countries people want their government to learn from. China ranks in the middle but still comes out ahead of the United States, pointing to shifting perceptions of the two powers.

I couldn’t find a youth-focused poll about how Europeans perceive the US. Threat perception may even be higher for those in this population segment who do not remember the “good old days” of the transatlantic cooperation www.politico.eu/article/poll...

Education is a service sector and international students is how you export this product. There are entire departments and towns in the US which owe their financial wellbeing to international students. And no, their loss is not Europe’s or Canada’s gain.

I agree with this thread. Protests are not always effective. But sometimes protests change the opposition itself if not the government. That’s what partly happened with CHP. That might be happening with the Democrats in the US

Has anyone seen a poll result for the youth opinion on the US in Europe? My very limited anecdotal pool tells me a grand shift in the works: US seen as a primary threat for Europe even more so than Russia, which is an astonishing turn in perception

History shows a pattern here. When governments begin criminalizing the observation of dissent—using technical oversteps as justification—it’s often a warning sign. We’ve seen similar patterns precede press crackdowns in countries like Turkey, Russia, and Myanmar.

Authoritarian governments claim to imprison journalists not b/o their journalistic activities but b/o something else of course 🙄 So if you let this one slip away, more journalists will be arrested for sure. They’re always testing, two step fwd, one step back.
