Finally, on my first day of teaching at SOAS, my office is starting to look and feel like mine. I feel beyond fortunate to be here.

If your colleagues and friends from Turkey are sharing lots of videos of a guy getting hugged by people, it’s because comedian Deniz Göktaş was released pending appeal after 88 days in dire conditions. Among so many detained, Deniz became a focus. He told jokes, and refused to be co-opted.

Thanks to our awards committee members, organizers @seanyom.bsky.social and Chantal Berman, and our outgoing leadership @nerminallam.bsky.social and Sarah El-Kazaz! We still have six more fantastic panels. Please attend if you can, as attendance shapes panel allocation for next year. See you there!

Extraordinary, powerful and heart-wrenching. Active duty Marine Colonel Zach Schmidt, speaking in his personal capacity, about Khalil, an Afghan national whose family helped U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Khalil was deported by the U.S. on Friday to a conflict zone.

“Taking the oil” has become a heuristic for Trump. A pleasingly powerful shortcut for thinking about complex stuff. Remember when US officials suggested Trump keep troops in northern Syria “for the oil”?

Good summation from @ishaantharoor.bsky.social on the strategic failure of the Iran war six months on. The scorecard is pretty dismal: --more dangerous Iranian leaders/more suffering for its people --more instability across the region --more setbacks for US interests globally

This piece has the in-depth analysis I've come to expect from @turkeyrecap.bsky.social, plus a new fact I learned today: Turkey recently became the world's second-largest megayacht builder, nudging out the Netherlands and ranking behind Italy. It's number one in European plastic waste imports.

Thank you for highlighting this key aspect! Most analyses of the 2016 coup and its aftermath highlight the purges, arrests, etc. But @hakkitas.bsky.social did some serious data work on the building of the state. I was glad to contribute to how AKP narratives made this possible.

Tomorrow marks 10 years since Turkey's failed coup attempt. With @hakkitas.bsky.social, we unpack how the events of 15 July 2016 catalyzed a decade of "epic autocratization." Epic in scale, epic in the narrative of "destan" the AKP used to legitimize it. www.giga-hamburg.de/en/publicati...
