We keep asking LLMs whether they're conscious. I got more interested in WHO and WHEN taught them how to answer. I traced such self-report through 66 training checkpoints, 3 post-training stages, ~90k continuations. Paper: philarchive.org/archive/EKRWPT #philosophy #llm #ai #science #consci #cogsci

It’s worth noting that: (a) we humans are nothing more than bundles of heuristics learned by a more complex neural architecture with built in inductive bias, and (b) this definition means stream processing is non-algorithmic, and that’s exactly what human-style continuous learning is.

But on the cognitive science side, this sort of retrospective rationalisation of a online process as a batch one grants the human brain magic comoutational properties that allow the whole tiresome range of post-Dreyfusian/post-Searlean/and complexity-based no go arguments (presented as theorems).

AI critics have every right to be aggressively defensive against the constant stream of harassment and misogyny they face. But the resulting discourse leaves no room for collegial debate and disagreement. It makes scientific and philosophical engagement impossible, even for allies.

Great write up. I agree with most of this. Just want to point out that the author spends no time arguing that AI proofs are generally invalid or unreliable or constitute a difference in kind from human-generated proofs. The comparison to human performance is basically irrelevant to this critique.

richROT has been assembled in Dublin! #Robophilosophy2026
A picture of me with richROT the burner robot. richROT is a standard metal trash can, it is covered in stickers and has a green LED light as an eye and more lights around its lid. richROT sits on a table in the conference reception area, on a light purple table cloth. I am standing next to it, leaning on it with my right arm. I am dressed in black and smiling.

The image is just the first page of the paper linked in the post. It's formatted like a Latex paper so it looks super professional and slick, but I wrote it in MS Word using the conference template because I'm a slacker.

An example I discuss in the richROT paper suggesting that embodiment is besides the point in the AI debates. Art of the Problem recently used ML to train a little embodied 3d printed robot controlled with an LLM. Charming little hobby project, darling little robot.
A side from the richROT talk.
Case Study 1: Art of the Problem’s GrowBots

artoftheproblem.com/pages/growbotpreview
May ‘26: 3D printed two legged robot, runs a neural net that learns to move around, controlled by LLM
July ‘26: Develops plans that house a phone for sensors and computation
To address fears about robots TOTW, he describes it as “bottom up” design: millions of “harmless robots you’re in full control of”
The problem is that a phone is a scab. It is already on “their” side (complicit in surveillance capitalism etc.)

If the tech industry used all the same corruption, greed, false advertising, environmental disregard, abusive labor practices, etc., but they were more careful about their cognitive science claims, would things really be so different?

The conflation of consciousness with embodiment is conceptually misguided, and falls into the trap of treating ML as a purely abstract effort in platonic mathematics.

I'll be in Dublin next week for #Robophilosophy2026, and I'm bringing my trashcan robot richROT to the conference for its international debut!
A picture of richROT the Burner robot. It is a metal trashcan with an attached lid, and a pipe vent sticking out of the top, with a V shaped antenna. The trashcan has a crude face in the front, with unlit LED eyes, a faucet nose, and a thermometer as a vertical mouth. It has two arms made from HVAC tubes coming out from the sides, with gloves at the hand end, and secured with bright orange tape around the shoulder and arm pit area. There is a clipboard attached to the lid that cannot be read. The trashcan sits on a light brown desert floor, clearly the Black Rock desert, home to Burning Man. A bike, a cargo trailer, and a vehicle can be seen in the background.

Finally! 🤩 Our position piece: Against the Uncritical Adoption of 'AI' Technologies in Academia: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... We unpick the tech industry’s marketing, hype, & harm; and we argue for safeguarding higher education, critical thinking, expertise, academic freedom, & scientific integrity. 1/n
Abstract: Under the banner of progress, products have been uncritically adopted or
even imposed on users — in past centuries with tobacco and combustion engines, and in
the 21st with social media. For these collective blunders, we now regret our involvement or
apathy as scientists, and society struggles to put the genie back in the bottle. Currently, we
are similarly entangled with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. For example, software updates are rolled out seamlessly and non-consensually, Microsoft Office is bundled with chatbots, and we, our students, and our employers have had no say, as it is not
considered a valid position to reject AI technologies in our teaching and research. This
is why in June 2025, we co-authored an Open Letter calling on our employers to reverse
and rethink their stance on uncritically adopting AI technologies. In this position piece,
we expound on why universities must take their role seriously toa) counter the technology
industry’s marketing, hype, and harm; and to b) safeguard higher education, critical
thinking, expertise, academic freedom, and scientific integrity. We include pointers to
relevant work to further inform our colleagues.Figure 1. A cartoon set theoretic view on various terms (see Table 1) used when discussing the superset AI
(black outline, hatched background): LLMs are in orange; ANNs are in magenta; generative models are
in blue; and finally, chatbots are in green. Where these intersect, the colours reflect that, e.g. generative adversarial network (GAN) and Boltzmann machine (BM) models are in the purple subset because they are
both generative and ANNs. In the case of proprietary closed source models, e.g. OpenAI’s ChatGPT and
Apple’s Siri, we cannot verify their implementation and so academics can only make educated guesses (cf.
Dingemanse 2025). Undefined terms used above: BERT (Devlin et al. 2019); AlexNet (Krizhevsky et al.
2017); A.L.I.C.E. (Wallace 2009); ELIZA (Weizenbaum 1966); Jabberwacky (Twist 2003); linear discriminant analysis (LDA); quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA).Table 1. Below some of the typical terminological disarray is untangled. Importantly, none of these terms
are orthogonal nor do they exclusively pick out the types of products we may wish to critique or proscribe.Protecting the Ecosystem of Human Knowledge: Five Principles
