I asked my dad what he’d like to do for Father’s Day and he said he’d like to go to the movies. I’ve since been informed that he’d like to see The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Just drove down Baxter Ave and saw a two-car accident in which one had flipped over (!) and then not a block later I watched a woman hit a parked car, swerve out and then back, and hit another parked car. Louisville, what are we doing?

I have a new story out, a strange love story, about…an ant. Thank you to @variantlit.bsky.social and to editor @suzyeynon.bsky.social for including me in their gorgeous summer issue! variantlit.com/the-peony-ant/
The Peony Ant by Nora Maynard

Beatrice was celebrating her 24th birthday alone, so she bought herself a bunch of peonies at the bodega. Back at her apartment, she arranged them in a glass pitcher she used for lemonade. As she bent to smell the flowered’ fragrance, she noticed an ant. Its glossy body stood sharp against the pink petals, like three dark beads strung on a wire.

Many happy returns of the day, said the ant, tilting its wedge-shaped face towards her.

LLMs impress the writers who do not want to write, the coders who don't want to code, the researchers who don't want to research, and the lawyers that don't want to actually understand case law. Those that desperately tell you how powerful Al is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs' outputs tend to be people with low standards.

Louisville: St John Center is slated to lose $117,000 in the FY27 budget. I know better than anybody what this would mean. PLEASE take time to email your council person and ask them to restore funding. Sample language is below and you can find your council person here: apps.lojic.org/metrocouncil...
Protect Access to Day Shelter Services in Our Community
St. John Center is facing a significant reduction in public funding under the proposed FY27
Metro budget-an estimated $117,000
decrease, or roughly 43% less than last year.
These funds have historically supported the core operations of our day shelter, covering essential needs like security, cleaning, and maintaining a safe, welcoming space for individuals experiencing homelessness. Without this support, we may be forced to reduce hours or close on weekends, limiting access to critical services for our community. We are asking our supporters to make their voices heard-please consider reaching out to your Metro Council member to share why access to day shelter services matters and to advocate for sustained funding that ensures our neighbors have a safe place to go each day.
Below is a sample language you can use when reaching out. Thank you in advanceDear Council Member [Last Name],
I hope you are well.
I am writing as a constituent to express my concern about the proposed FY27 Metro budget and its impact on funding for homeless services, particularly support for day shelter operations at organizations like St. John Center.
Day shelters provide critical, life-saving services for individuals experiencing homelessness, including a safe place to rest, access basic needs, and connect with resources. Reductions in funding for these essential operations could result in decreased hours or limited access, directly affecting some of the most vulnerable members of our community.
I respectfully ask that you consider the importance of maintaining-or restoring-funding that supports day shelter services.
Ensuring access to these resources is vital to the health, safety, and dignity of our neighbors.
Thank you for your time, leadership, and commitment to our community.
Sincerely,
[Your Namel
