Beatrice was celebrating her 24th birthday alone, so she bought herself a bunch of peonies at the bodega. Back at her apartment, she arranged them in a glass pitcher she used for lemonade. As she bent to smell the flowered’ fragrance, she noticed an ant. Its glossy body stood sharp against the pink petals, like three dark beads strung on a wire.

Many happy returns of the day, said the ant, tilting its wedge-shaped face towards her.

Here’s my first April 30/30 prompt: “Deconstructed Fable” Write a poem in which every day you receive some fragment of a fable. A red cloak, the huntsman’s ax, a grandmother’s spectacles, etc. Write the poem in such a way that “solving” this fable directs you to return to your childhood home.

In researching various birds for the novel, I found this quote about young kingfishers that I am quite fond of.

“A young kingfisher seems to grow like a potato in a cellar, all the growth going to the end near the light. He sits looking toward the door and, of course, his face naturally all goes to nose. Everything is forfeited to furnish him with a big head, a spear-pointed bill, and a pair of strong wings to give this arrow-shaped bird a good start when he dives for fish.”
