It's not just administrative bloat. It's disinvestment by the state. In 1996, 32 percent of the U's revenue came from the state. Now it's only 16 percent. If the state isn't funding it, how is it considered a public university? More about the University of Minnesota's upcoming employee pay cuts.

Wow, there seems to be no end to the editorials that blame scientists for “lack of public trust”. And that completely ignores governments and politicians and billionaire media owners who attack science and lie about science. We cannot communicate our way out of this.

Kind of! When I use mine, I balance the base against the heel of my hand and manipulate the nib with the tips of my fingers. Mind you, my hands are tiny, but it works pretty well for me.

You might find that a short and chunky pen like the majohn q1 is easier and more comfortable to hold, weirdly--I have some hypermobile friends who swear by them bc they require less grip strength (both bc the pen glides more than biros and because of the shape). Not sure it works for lefties, though

I still use plenty of shimmer inks--I actually prefer piston fillers because they're the easiest to quickly unclog a shimmer ink--but I fully admit they can be a mild pain in the ass. I won't touch the mega sheening inks any more for note taking, though. Too much dry time, too much smearing.

Try the Majohn A1 or A2 if you want more vanishing points but cheaper -- it's the same nib assembly with a couple of different bodies, for way way cheaper. The Jinhao 10s and 20s are also fine if you put a little silicone grease on the side of the nib to help with hard starting.

I always loved the Mike Rosenzweig paper that framed a frequency dependent fitness landscape as a sphagnum bog (which is like walking on a waterbed) it deforms downward under the weight of the mass of the average phenotype in an evolving population, so there’s disruptive selection wherever you stand

I was a little luckier than that but not by much. I have quite a few high sheen inks I never use and when I got the Diamine Inkvent calendar last year all the sheeners went directly to a friend who wanted to use them for art. Too messy for me!

The store is on vacation right now, which I didn't realize last night. I should note for other people that the nib I describe is their regular fine/medium; they also do a regular fine/medium they label as "round fine/medium." They are my favorite fines bc I can get line variation on a thin line.

Do you have a good local stationary store? Often they will let you try pens out before buying them, even the inexpensive ones, just to let you get a feel for what you're getting into. They're not always obvious, either; my go to is actually a local art supplies store called Wet Paint. They rule!

Shading is maybe my favorite ink property and as a bonus it's so well behaved compared to shimmer and sheen! I love both of them but I do not love pen clogging or long dry times. Shading by contrast never seems to make you put up with anything annoying in exchange for Pretty.

Not basic, just a real popular optimum on the trade off. ;) I use Fines all the time, too. Especially when I'm trying to write smaller and not roll around in ink properties. The Kakuno has a great reputation and I'm glad you're enjoying yours!

The problem is that there's a trade off between needlepoint and smoothness, but if you like a needlepoint... Japanese pens ALL THE WAY vs Chinese or European brands. (I am a 0.7m-1.0m stub girl in my heart of hearts but spouse is a needlepoint lover and recs Pilot Penmanship and Platinum Preppy.)

For my money though I would send you to look at Penbbs first of the four. They have this almost fude-lite "knife nib" that is smoooooooooth smooth smooth to write with, lots of cute colors, and every filling system you could possibly want. Their Etsy shop is the place to get them.

I am a big fan of some of the nicer Chinese brands in terms of bang for your buck. Hongdian is another brand to look at, but they tend to go in less for demonstrators. All four brands Just Work right out of the box and are a solid step up in quality from Jinhao/Wingsung et al.

In terms of nice demonstrator piston fillers, I hear great things about the Asvine p36. PenBBS also makes some really nice demonstrators in both vacuum and piston fillers. (I like pistons better, personally.) For cheaper, it's hard to beat the Moonman/Majohn M2 or Wancai Mini.

The cracking thing is unfortunately something TWSBI is notorious for. It's only happened to me once over four Ecos/Eco-Ts and one Vac mini, and that after some years, but it's frequent enough that some people won't touch the brand.
