They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Mine are selective flowerers, but I love them anyway. The two main plants I have are at least 18 years old. They’ve each made many baby plants, some thriving and some struggling along. Still trying to figure out the light in my house (after 6 years there’s still no perfect place for them).

At one point, we had three pets. Now we have two pets. Do we have enough pets? Do others have enough pets? Can people who want pets afford pets? Can pets who do not have people yet find their people?

Anthropic's IPO filing apparently warns investors that advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity,” which is a great sales approach and also, coincidentally, the exact phrase I was told when I brought home this guy.

Anyone else watching Dark Matter? The most recent episode is gorgeous, and this Jason Dessen is my most favorite. Makes up for the last 30 pages of horror in an otherwise great book. Curious if Blake Crouch is building this season from discarded book ideas or if they’re new extrapolations.

Just an FYI: there is no such thing as machine crochet. No machine or robot can do it. It is a uniquely human craft that can't be reproduced with AI. Grab a hook and some yarn, y'all.

Personal anecdote: I spent my early 20s as a singer/songwriter in the NY/NJ/PA area. Once I started dating my now-husband, I started to have writer’s block. I’ve written nothing since. Our 15th anniversary was yesterday. Once I got happy, the songs stopped coming. 🤔

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

While it is about a specific NYC experience, it’s also reflective of experiences in cities all across the country. How can families best serve their kids when the system is inherently flawed, unbalanced, and unfair? And as “school choice” and voucher programs proliferate, it will only get worse.

I was looking at the website of a dedicated romance bookstore in Devon and saw they had a section called "Books written with AI that are actually worth reading", and when I tell you I was inhaling deeply as I clicked. Should have known better. Props to Moonlit Chapters in Barnstaple, good work.
post reading: Look, if your using Gen AI to generate content in any form, then you need to rethink whether this community is for you.

I've seen an influx of authors, readers and bookish businesses using Gen AI in some form on their socials (and websites) and somehow i am flabbergasted every time.

We should all know by now that Gen AI steals from creatives. So using it while claiming to love authors is a choice. Using it as a bookish business when you are making money off of your love of books, is a choice.

And its the wrong bloody choice. And you should see yourself out.

to me, this is absolutely the most triggering part of a completely bleak look at the state of young women and girls today (spoiler: it's about the moms. it's always about the moms).
Claire was more ambivalent. She thought GLP-1’s were for people with real medical issues, not teenagers who wanted to look better in Revolve skirt sets. “We’re basically still kids,” she says. “I thought that was wrong.” Couldn’t Marie just hit the gym a little harder? She also worried about the drugs’ potential long-term effects since they’re so new, but Marie was living in the moment. “I don’t really care,” she says. “I’m in my prime, so I’d rather look cute now.” Claire was also jealous. As a dancer, she had always been aware of how she looked in a leotard. In high school, she started to gain some weight, and her mom, a former sorority girl, was always encouraging her to lose a few pounds — especially if she wanted to rush. “Sororities are going to look at your size,” Claire remembers her saying. “Wouldn’t you rather start now?” She was only a size 8 and had never felt that much bigger than other girls until she got to campus and looked around.

Back at home over winter break, Claire told her mom that Marie was on a GLP-1. Her mom admitted she was on one too and had lost 30 pounds. “Now that you know I’m on it, would you feel a little better about doing it as well?” Claire remembers her asking. The answer was “yes.” Her mom got her supply from a friend, who started shipping compounded tirzepatide to Claire’s dorm. When Laura found out, she asked Claire to hook her up. Then she called her mom — who is also on a GLP-1 and once paid Laura $10 a day to cut out sugar when she was in sixth grade — to ask her to cover the $100 a month it would cost. “Everyone’s on it,” Laura told her. “And my mom was like, ‘Sure, I’ll pay.’” In a matter of weeks, with their mothers’ permission, all three girls were injecting themselves with weight-loss drugs that could forever warp their sense of how thin they need to be.
