genAI discourse drives me nuts “putting aside that the tech needs to steal from every artist with an explicit goal of competing with and devaluing them, I think using it speeds up my programming!” back up, chucklefuck, what was that first bit again?

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Every one of these kids involved at Cornell should be held deeply responsible for their actions or inaction. Forever. Never let them live it down. The Hellenic system at Universities should be abolished. Hazing is abusive and should be illegal. Tear this whole fucking patriarchy apart.

Just like in our government, until there is actually real accountability for actions and people are held responsible and not just merely inconvenienced for the awful shit they do this will never stop.

As a man, I'm really tired of Not All Men. Because yeah, okay, it's not. I've learned better. Lots of men have. But it's always men. It's always fucking men. Even the safe ones weren't always safe and may not always be safe. Men are, at base, untrustworthy based on the actions of All Men.

At some point you realize that what we're really living in is a country of abusers and the abused. The very power dynamics of our government are built around the same social constructs abusers use to control their loved ones. Guess where they learned it.

And until you learn a modicum of empathy and that you're hurting people, that women - people - are legitimately scared and that shit like this gang rape is *common* and these fucking douchebag kids will probably never be held accountable it's really hard to start policing it in yourself.

I fully believe that no man, including myself, is free of some amount of guilt. We've all been quiet when we shouldn't be. We've all done something that has made a woman at the very least uncomfortable, if not scared. We've all done that jokey shit to buddies that perpetuated the entire culture.

Erik Lars Myers @eriklarsmyers.com · 30/09/2026
It's enormous amounts of peer pressure and there's a certain level where some men get away with so much terrible shit that there's always the underlying current of "Well if they're getting away with it, maybe...." It's all so fucking poisonous and pervasive and awful.

Erik Lars Myers @eriklarsmyers.com · 30/09/2026
It's exhausting. Men are largely trash and while I think it's heavily men on the political right it's certainly far from limited to it. As a man you're taught through experience that it's What You Do and every man has seen the built in defense mechanism of "it's not that serious." Except it is.

Erik Lars Myers @eriklarsmyers.com · 30/09/2026
This is true. Men don't talk about it much, I guess maybe out of shame or fear of exclusion or something. I guess I'm old enough now that I don't care if I don't make any more male friends than I already have. This bullshit has been true everywhere in my whole life.

Any time we hear "AI did this and this", it's not proof programs are becoming sentient, but that the humans deploying said AI did this (which is generally failing to deploy proper sandboxing measures to prevent an AI from going against security) It's not the AI that's rogue, it's the company

I have a theory about how many of the world's problems are caused by people who were told they were the smartest people alive as kids, believed it, and then when they became adults and couldn't accept that maybe they weren't that special, started breaking shit if only to prove they were special

I think the "debate" about bringing iced coffee to job interviews is effective at distracting people from the really bad job market, the high unemployment rate for Black women, ongoing mass layoffs in tech and media, and how Gen Z workers are refusing to adopt many toxic aspects of corp work culture

There is something so unbelievably bleak about an article that calmly walks readers through how to navigate being laid off after 50, losing your health insurance, and somehow surviving the years until Medicare. What a broken country.

Laid Off After 50, and No Health Insurance? Here’s What to Consider. (Gift Article)
At best, older workers will struggle to find health insurance that bridges the years before they qualify for Medicare at age 65.

No, AI isn’t gonna kill us all in the next 10 years. No, LLMs don’t keep going rogue. No, general AI superintelligence isn’t anywhere close and we’re not even on the path toward it with LLMs. All that shit is ultimately propaganda about how powerful and cool these systems supposedly are.

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
Erin Redwing
@realizingerin
I went to an rationalist/EA Al doomer event last night with the goal of meeting someone who could calmly explain to me the argument for how they get to the conclusion that Al will kill everyone.
Because these are rationalists, I expected to find people who could lay out a serious extinction pathway, walk through the assumptions and intermediate steps, identify choke points where negative pathways could potentially be regulated, and entertain disagreement about where their assumptions might break down.
My experience was the exact opposite.
The people I spoke to seemed psychologically unable to entertain the possibility that their conclusion (that Al literally kills everyone, which was a point that many would not even budge on) might be wrong.
Their most extreme conclusion was treated as an axiom.
I had multiple people walk out of conversations with me when I questioned their inevitable extinction premise.
At one point during a panel, the moderator asked everyone in the audience who was still skeptical of Al doom to raise their hands. About half the room did. He then told all of the skeptics to leave the panel and go with one of the speakers, who would answer their questions separately. They filtered out all the skeptics, and continued the panel only with the subset who accepted their extreme position.
I genuinely felt like a heretic just for questioning whether superintelligent Al inevitably leads to the extinction of humanity, or entertaining the possibility that the future might actually turn out well.
That does not mean Al safety is fake. Obviously there are serious questions about rapidly advancing Al systems and what happens as they become much more capable. Those are exactly the conversations I went there hoping to have.
But what I encountered was an apocalyptic death cult. These people are not rational. They are deeply afraid, they reinforce that fear in one another, and they have become so emotionally committed to apocalypse
