There are two problems here, one eternal and one novel. The eternal problem is humanity’s preference for self-validation. Left to our own devices we seek out ideas that flatter our biases and resentments, reinforce our own notions of how the world works. Crowds develop manias, they hallucinate.

By reducing the cost and technical difficulty of worldwide publishing to almost nothing, the internet has also destroyed any pressure to maintain standards governing which information circulates. Instead of institutions structuring the public’s collective mind, you get this roiling ocean of ideas.

Everyone keeps reaching for the “too big to fail” button because it is fundamentally harder for them to imagine what happens if it’s too big to succeed. The unique conditions in play make a bailout impossible. This is also an ideological bubble to the point I think it creates a schism in society.
